- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Certified Lifeguard
- Collegiate Athlete
As an Emergency Medical Technician, a Lifeguard, and former College Athlete, I don’t fit the typical protector mold regarding my background – a background that lacks any military, law enforcement, or security experience. Yet at GDBA, associates with an EMT, lifeguard, or athletic background can also be a great match. As a lifeguard and EMT, I’ve always protected the safety of others, and this responsibility fits perfectly with GDBA’s mission. And as a former competitive athlete, I’ve always been willing to train hard and improve — which fits great with GDBA’s promotion by merit culture.
Protecting others seems to have always been in my blood. From an early age, my father, an avid mountaineer, took me high into the Sierra Mountains and taught me survival skills and emergency first aid. Faced with blizzards, injury, and exhaustion, I learned to care for myself and others. As a young adult, I incorporated these early lessons in first aid as a certified lifeguard in the undertow beaches and powerful surf of Southern California. The satisfaction and self-worth I attained as a lifeguard – serving, protecting, and saving lives — convinced me that my life’s purpose is to protect others.
Unlike my friends in Fire-Rescue and Law Enforcement who often grumble about seniority, bureaucracy, and politics impeding their success, I’m happy to say I avoid these public-sector frustrations at GDBA where my success is based upon the same reasons for my success as an athlete: Hard work. To become a pro in protection, I applied the same approach I did for success as an athlete, an EMT, and a lifeguard. First, study the material. Second, ask questions. And third, practice. In short, I became a life-long student, learning all I can about threat assessment, teaching techniques, and emergency medicine.
I’m now the Chief Medical Instructor and manage a Global Operations Center for one of our biggest clients. One more thing: I’ve only been at GDBA for 4 years! As our firm grows so too will the career opportunities for every associate — regardless of background — who is willing to learn, improve, and grow.
