I am currently reading The Gift Of Fear and have just left a relationship due to verbal abuse and mind games I feared would turn physical. There is a lot if educational info out there but - what do you do when your abuser served in the special police (not in USA) When they use the skills they learned to get in offenders' minds to victimise? Many Police and military should be commended but those few should be addressed.

Mr. de Becker,
I am a Police Officer who was asked to speak to a large audience of realtors regarding their personal safety in their industry. While putting together my presentation, I knew they wanted me to address several areas: at the office, in the field, self defense and available technology. I also knew that prevention was ultimately what would keep them alive. I knew I had to recommend to every person in that room The Gift of Fear. I use it in my field regularly. Thank you....

I read Mr. DeBecker's "The Gift of Fear" in 1999. In 2013 I was involved in a shooting protecting a civilian child from an armed aggressor. I used indicators that you specifically cover in the book to identify the threat, and the escalating level of violence.
I was able to subdue the aggressor, but I took a gunshot wound and two injured ribs in the process. Fortunately physical fitness has been a priority to me and I was able to work through the problems this situation provided and protected the people who needed protection. Listening to those indicators I was able to get a short drop on the reaction and physically engage the aggressor as he was drawing his weapon to prevent a fire fight in a crowded location to limit the number of casualties to just myself and the aggressor, who was taken into police custody. This was a much better outcome than having lives lost in a shootout.
This is one of a long list of testimonials to your work. I look forward to your next release.

Given the worrisome state of the United States Secret Service as we read in recent news, I can only hope that Gavin de Becker & Associates have been asked to help whip the Secret Service back into shape. Please.
P.S. - About to re-read "The Gift of Fear" and "Protecting the Gift." Waiting for the appropriate season to make sure my two children read "The Gift of Fear" too.

Mr. de Becker,
I am fortunate enough to have never lived through any of the stories you told in your book. At least not yet… But now, after reading your book, I am better prepared.
Your book was a required text for a class I am taking called “Victimology”. When I found out we had to read The Gift of Fear, I was hesitant thinking I wasn’t going to like it (as I do not read non-fiction) and it would take forever. I read it from beginning to end in one day. Couldn’t put it down.
In this day and age where we rely so much on technology, it’s refreshing to read something that deals with real-life issues. This is NOT a game.
Well done and THANKS !

I absolutely love the book the Gift of Fear. I recommend it to everyone I meet. It is a valuable resource. It has inspired me to read more and increase my knowledge on the subject of W P V. I teach this at work and want to learn so much more now. Thanks so much.

Every woman should read "The Gift of Fear".
After I read the book for the first time, I bought a case from Amazon and handed them out to the first women that sat at the bar (with, or without dates). "Read this," I said. "And pass it on to another woman." Two years later, I reread the book, and did the same thing. I have a dear friend in security, whom I gave it to, also. He read it, gave his copy to his mom and told her to read and pass on.
I recently heard from my (female) boss of another violent, neighborhood crime and am reordering another case of this book. She had never heard of it, still. As a bar owner, she MUST read this.
Crime continues, and will always continue. Listening to your gut, trusting your instincts (fight or flight),and not being afraid to stand up and be the bitch, if you must, can save many, many lives. Thanks for a life -changing, -saving) book.

Greetings from London, England. Just wanted to tell you how impressed I am by your book 'The Gift of Fear'. I shall make sure my children and grandchildren read it too - a book that's not just tremendously useful and potentially life-saving but eminently readable too.
My working life was as a journalist. I covered some harrowing stories about terrorised women, some of them stalked to the point of driving them insane with fear.
I'm going to read your other books now - my grandchildren are not yet teenagers, but I want them to be prepared.
Thank you so much and very best wishes to you, your family and colleagues.

I've read your book the gift of fear and I would like to say thank you so much. Truly, I mean that with every fibre of my being. Today I got off the train fairly late at night and as I was walking to my car I started to feel really uncomfortable, I realised that two men were walking behind me, so I went on high alert. I then heard them say " i'll go this way and you grab her." Admittedly, before reading your book I would have brushed it of and thought that maybe I misheard or that I was just paranoid and that my mind was making things up. Instead, I didn't, I trusted my instincts and turned around and stared right at them. The man laughed it of and said "he's the instigator." It was at that pointed that I just ran away from them. I would just like to say thank you again as without your book I wouldn't have trusted my instincts. So what I'm trying to say is that this book has really saved my like, just like the cover suggested. Thank you.

I loved The Gift of Fear. Superb stuff. Gave you a five star review on Amazon, etc. Thanks Mr. de Becker!
BTW from the few bits of your personal life you dropped in the book, it sounds like your personal life and how you came to this career would make an awesome movie. Maybe drop the hint to one of your Hollywood clients! LOL
Seriously, superb, empowering book. I'm using the lessons and sharing them with everyone I love. Great job and all the best.

The Gift of Fear was certainly an eye opener for myself and family. Well defined on certain aspects you sometimes never really think about on your own.

The gift of fear is such a powerful tool for parents. I read it years ago when my kids were small (and would listen to me) now that my daughter is 16 I am giving it to her to read but it would be wonderful if it could be adapted to a teen version specifically for them to read.
