I am currently a psych. major at Indiana University in Pennsylvaina. I had bought your book titled "The Gift of Fear" about a year ago.I never picked it up untill 3 days ago. Well I just wanted to say that it is one of the most insightful books I have read on this subject and has helped me understand this subject more. I also thouroughly enjoyed the book.

Dear Mr. Becker: I recently read your book, "The Gift of Fear" which was lovingly given to me by my brother. I found it to be tremendous, and I have recommended it to many women. Several of the incidences you state in your book happened to me in the past, although I am glad to state nothing that caused me any physical harm. Although I have always been cautious, I am more aware of my “instincts,” as you state, after reading your book. It really changed my thinking for the better. I know there are many men in the world that are not stalkers or predators, but I feel more equipped to deal with the men who are. Thank you. Anita Gridley

Hi, I got married February 23 2001 in Texas to my Beautiful American Wife. I was the boy from Clapham who always loved American Girls & ended with the most Beautiful American Girl anyone could wish for. All my life I have been lonely and now finally God answered my prayers. Yes there is a God out there who sent me an Angel to be my Wife. And now I live in Texas the land where People can make there dreams come true. At first I had a culture clash but I have learnt to love this land we call Texas. However now my Mother is not well & I have to return to London my now second home to be with her until February I pray yet once again and hope she will be well. For I Love my Family. Remeber this nothing counts so much as blood the rest are just strangers. This is so true cherish your families & loved ones everyday of your lifes. Dont fall prey to petty arguements for life is short and can change anytime just like that. This Christmas there will be lots of broken hearts & lots of happy hearts. For although my heart is broken due to my mum being ill, I will make this Christmas a happy one. I now live in the Greatest Country in the World USA and although my Family lives in England my heart is always with them for I love them . I am so sorry I was mean to them now that I am so far away. Please treat your loved ones with love & never say goodnight in Anger for one breath of anger can destroy the love that took you years to build. I pray that God Protects America & The World in this time of War. Yes I now say God Bless America God Bless The President God Bless England & all the Countries that will make this World a Peaceful Place may he protect our Soldiers & Armed Forces against this Evil. This will be a Happy yet Sad Christmas. But I still Believe the SAS is the best anti terrorist unit in the World. I wish Happy Christmas to everybody. Phillip Bastians.

Dear Mr. de Becker, I was referencing and recommending "The Gift of Fear" to my dad the other day. Your book aided my family in making choices that de-escalated harassment we were receiving, from an acquaintance, on the phone. You personally contributed to the safety of me and my family. My dad had never heard your name before. Imagine my surprise, when i got an e-mail from him a few hours later, and he mentioned your home being the place where Mr. Harrison peacefully died. I am gratified that you provided safe haven for a dear soul, and I thank you for the work you do and what you contribute to the people of the world, both famous and ordinary. Thank you, Lois

Thank you so much for taking care of Our George and his family in his final days. The job you did keeping the press and the paparazzi away was more than admirable. No one should have to go through that kind of censored, especially when they're terminally ill. Please let Dhani & Olivia know that we love them and grieve with them although we've never met. The world has suffered a terrible loss with George's death. I don't think we'll ever recover. Goddess Bless.

I've been in mourning since I heard the very sad news. I knew it was coming, I just never thought about how much it would hurt. I've loved my Beatles since I was 2 or 3. I always thought Paul was the cute one, however, George was always the prolific one. Always had something wise to say. I will always miss him and his wise ways. My Beatles are leaving me one at a time... what do I do? All I can do is respect them for what they were, how much they represented to so very many of us and what they still mean to me. We just have to remember that John, and now George, were part of us and even though they were so famous, they still had hearts just like ours. To John Lennon: I miss you. To George Harrison: My heart hurts. I miss you already. I will miss you always. - Michelle, A Fan Forever

My heart felt condolences to George Harrison's family and friends. Mr. Harrison's music and words were a great inspiration and comfort to me in my younger days and continue to be as I occasionally revisit them. It seems there are always mountains of praise for those we loose, but in this case all the words ring true. Thankyou George for your music and inspiration.

Dear Mr. DeBecker, I'm not sure if you are the right person, but, if you are indeed the family friend of the late Mr. George Harrison, I would like to pass along my deepest condolences to you and your family. If able to, could you please pass along the same message to Mrs. Harrison and her son.I, myself had a brain tumor. I was very fortunate that it was benign. It did however cause some permanent damage, as it took the doctors 1& 1/2 years to diagnose it ( it was the size of a softball by then ). At first they told me I had MS. When I was in the hospital, there was a younger guy ( 30 ish ) in my ward. He had a malignant brain tumor. I saw what he and his girlfriend were going through. Once I heard that George had a tumor, I couldn't help but think about that person in the hospital, and how he suffered so terribly. I just hope that George was lucky enough to not have any pain. His wife must be a very strong person to go through everything she has. My heart goes out to her. ( I know how difficult everything was for my husband and children, when I was going through everything.) I sent George a few cards ( to the hospitals ) during his illness. I hope he got them.( I know that he probably got tons of mail.)Is there any way that you could maybe post a box number on your web site so that everyone can send sympathy cards to the family ? Thanks for your time. Take care.

I've been impressed by Mr. de Becker's accomplishments for many years. But by providing a private and save place of refuge, for this quiet and gentle man and his family to spend his final hours, protecting them from the prying eyes he spent his life trying to avoid, Gavin has earned the respect and gratitude of millions of people all over the world who see this as an extremely personal act of kindness given torwards someone in their own family. George Harrison, along with his love, generosity and music; will be remembered for a very, very long time. ~ Thank You ~

Dear Gavin de Becker, I searched you out after finding you were the one George Harrison spent his last moments on earth trusting and letting go and going forward in his spiritual journey with........bless you and love to Olivia and Dhani. My husband Mark and I live in the UK, now part-time, near George and Olivia and Dhani, and we were proud to feel his energy and presence in the Thames Valley, we shall miss him. I've was previously a Victim Advocate in Key West Florida and your books interest me……I did that before moving for the past 3 years to the UK and recently relocated back to Florida, part-time, while my husband works in LA......he also plays guitar and I sing. We enjoyed performing in UK pubs around the Henley area and know Pete Brown, a son of George's friend, Joe. Presently my husband is working in Los Angeles as we are trying to pay off our loans in the USA and UK. My husband was born and raised in Liverpool, too, and I always said that meant he was part-Beatle !!! I am from Florida and missed my family so moved over to the USA while hanging on to our UK property in Watlington, and buying a small home for my daughters and son and grandson to share in Deland Florida so I didn't feel I'd abandoned them. I married my Liverpool Lad 4 years ago and felt thrilled to be related to the Beatle magic and music I'd howled about since growing up in Georgia in the 1960's. Anyway, blessings and love to everyone, the preciousness and brevity of life leave me humbled yet again........thank God for George Harrison's existence, he was a gift beyond words and fills my soul with music and tender feelings sung forever. Much love, again, to Olivia and Dhani, they carry on his legacy and love-------- Melinda

I'm familiar with your work through your interviews on NPR. I was surprised to read that you were with the Harrison's at George's sad passing. Due to your line of work, I suspect that you were responsible for the very limited 'celebrity deathwatch' media coverage that has become the norm these days---thank you. Hopefully, the relative discretion made the loss ever so slightly easier for George's friends and family to bear. Condolences on the loss of your dear friend. Hopefully those closest to him can take comfort that his music will bringing happiness to the world many, many years from now.

After reading some of the comments in your guest book, I would like -if possible -to change the entry I made for myself yesterday. Please see below for my edited version I am an American, born in Chicago in 1933, who has spent the last 45 years teaching English as a foreign language and writing textbooks for the same purpose. Although I have been living on and off in England since 1960, my work has taken me to a number of countries - Germany, Spain, France, Japan, Turkey,Brazil, Argentina, Sri Lanca, Slovakia, Poland and other places, where I have lectured to teachers and taught students, mostly adults. Over and over I have been asked the same series of questions: 'How do you explain the fact that the United States is so violent? Why do so many people there have guns? Why is the murder rate often a 100 times or more higher than in very poor countries? .' This is truly a fact that deeply overshadows the many positive features of the United States, its economic dynamism, its multi-ethnicity, the friendliness of many of the people. But to non-Americans - and to even those like myself who are proud to be Americans even though we have lived so long outside our native country, these are haunting questions. And they lead to another question that arises from the comments in your 'Guest Book' on your web-site. How can anyone believe the facetious arguments advanced against attempts to reform the notoriously lax laws against the guns that fuel this slaughter? How can anyone argue that is not the guns that are the problem but ' irresponsible individuals' who use them? This is like arguing that people should be given free access to nuclear weapons because it would not be the weapons that are responsible for blowing up a city but the people who buy such weapons. Or like arguing that heroin and crack-concaine should be sold in ordianry drug-stores because it is not the drugs but the people who use them who are to blame for addiction and the crimes this addiction leads to. Of course, there would still be violence in America without the present wide-spread ownership of handguns and even assault weapons. But it IS the ease of purchasing these weapons that is a significant part of the problem. Gavin de Becker's GIFT OF FEAR is a masterpiece of tight, lean prose. Americans need a masterpiece of tight, lean legislation to give them greater FREEDOM FROM FEAR OF GUNS

I am an American who has lived in Europe and Japan for the last 40 years, most of which have been spent teaching English as a foreign language and also writing textbooks (Oxford University Press, BBC English and Longman (Penguin -Pearson Education) . I am now writing a novel about a young woma, a Forensic Psychologist, who while doing research into a series of still unsolved rape-murders 30 years ago comes to suspect that the murderer may be her own father. As a child she witnessed destructive, corrosive violence in the home. As part of my research into the subject (which I know something about from my own childhood and adolescence) I read THE GIFT OF FEAR, which I regard as a masterpiece of good, direct, lean writing. Yours sincerely, Robert Johns O'Neill, born 1933, Chicago, Illinois. left America in 1957, has lived since then in Dortmund, Germany, Bournemouth, Poole, Brighton, Ankara, Buenos Aires, Yokohama, Frankfurt and now Brighton again

My daughter was a teenager at the time and though she had been raised to be strong and independent (we used to joke that if someone DID kidnap her, they wouldn't keep her)I used the scenarios in that book to start many a discussion about preparing her to live on her own - notice we live in CHICO - the flow of alcohol makes it a truly unsafe place for young people (especially women). My daughter has now begun work with a non-profit organization that attempts to bring some true self esteem and empowerment back to our teen girls. She would like to use some of your material as a resource but does not wish to plagiarize your work. Any further information would greatly appreciated. Again, thank you.

I'm a professor at the University of Puerto Rico. I teach mostly English composition and I use the Gift of Fear as a supplemental reading. I've done so for several semesters. My students and I really enjoy reading, discussing and writing about your book. I'm also a martial artist with black belts in two different styles. I wanted to teach as many students as possible about self defense and stay within the curriculum established for the courses I teach. The Gift of Fear has allowied me to do so.

"The Gift of Fear" is the handbook for student safety. I buy this book by the dozens and give them out to students, faculty, and staff members who bring personal protection issues to our attention. There should not be a security director or chief of police in America without a supply of these books. This is money well spent and for the common good. I can't wait for the next one.

Mr. De Becker, I made an entry to your guestbook about a year ago. I am a teacher from North Dakota. I use your book, "The Gift of Fear" in my Independent Living class. I spend at least a class period discussing it with my students and I recommend it to all of them. I feel that all women should have a copy of it, to refer to, in case the need arises. After I signed your guestbook last year, you responded and said you were thinking of publishing a book similar to "The Gift of Fear" that would be geared to younger girls, and would be 100-200 pages long. I think this is an excellent idea. I would love to use a book like this in my classes. I would probably have it be required reading in my Independent Living class. If you plan on publishing a book like this, please let me know when it will be available, so I can start using it in class! Thanks for all you do and for writing such wonderful books! Lisa Winkler

This message is in response to the Turn-Coat British living in America,a.k.a. Benidict Arnold, I mean, Phillip Bastians. First, how are you living in this country and criticing our President??? I've got a question for you, have you EVER served in the S.A.S., Commandos etc.? Well, I have served in the U.S. Special Forces and served 2 years with the S.A.S. exchange program. They are very good at what they do but they are NOT the only show in town. It's true that they were one of the first counter terrorist units but that doesn't make them the best. This war on Terrorism not only needs good men but a hefty financial backing. In my 2 years of British service, I noticed that they do not have the money or technology that is offered to U.S. units. Sometimes you need more than just a GunHo attitude. I'm sorry that you are disenchanted with life and how we think in America, maybe you should think about going back to Great Britain and it's Monarch. The reason this is called "America's War" is because it was AMERICA'S soil that was hit by these terrorists. God Bless America... Long live the President!!!

Hi, I am a British citizen living in Dallas Texas. I am sick of this war just being called Americas War. After all citizens from around the world got killed in this disgusting act of terrorisim by Bin Laden on the Trade Center. I am glad England & America has united in the fight against terrorists world wide. But I truly believe England should be leading this war after all us British are used to fighting terrorists unlike our American allies who always mess up in the Middle East read back during Jimmy Carter & Ronald Reagans term in office & dont forget Panama. England has been fighting this type of warfare for decades & we also have the best anti terrorists units in the world look at our SAS & SBS as well as The Parachute Regiment The Marine Commandos MI5 & MI6 Special Branch Military Intelligence & Scotland Yard. We have fought the IRA & although we still have problems if England truly decided to put democracy out the window we would eradicate the IRA. However The IRA days are nearly over & the SAS has had more success killing IRA members than the IRA killing us. Also dont forget England has won all its wars except the war of independence unlike America England has never been invaded. I am looking foward to watching France Germany Australia & Canada getting involved in this war against the Taliban. WE MUST WIN THIS WAR FOR WORLD PEACE. This I truly believe. The SAS was the first Special Forces unit in the world Delta Force & US Navy Seals followed thier example with thier copycat units & so too did the rest of Europe & the World. Thank God for Mr David Stirling the founder of the SAS who created the perfect solution to fighting terrorisim. If George Bush does not realise that England has a superior Anti Terrorist Fighting Army than anyone in the World & that England should lead the fight against terroriswim then he is surely blind. As for me I say God Bless the World not just America but every country who fights for peace. Thankyou for your time, Yours sincerely, Phillip Bastians. My new email is: phillipbronson@hotmail.com

I bought extra copies to give to my friends - single moms, first time college students, women on their own. Your writings have helped us to listen to messages and keep our eyes open - always! Your first book's content helped me to deal with a confrontation, and helped me to develop my own personal sense of staying on top of situations. Your books give wise warnings and messages to anyone who will read them. I very much admire your work in this field. Are you working on anything new? In the light of the terrorist attack, I think the whole country could use a guidebook. Thank you for helping so many of us, thank you very much.

5 people waiting outside a "safe" restaurant (2 smoking, laughing and talking to the others)as my wife and I came out. One then left ahead of us and 2 fell in behind. Intuition told me they were after us. I was fortunate enough to read it, made it apparent that I read it, made it apparent that I was ready - and they changed their minds. Too bad the USA wasn't paying attention. It looks as if the only people who read it were the guy in the parking garage that had the altercation at Boston Logan & somewhat belatedly the passengers on the 4th plane. One cockpit conversation reportedly had a highjacker promising one of the pilots "Don't worry; you won't get hurt." Now we are going to forbid curbside checkin of luggage... Mr. De Becker, thank you. The night before the WTC Bombing, I began to re-read "Gift of Fear". Because of this, I was able to think about the motivations of the assailants more rationally than had I not. It made it less easy to view this as a matter of "us versus them". Of course, it also made it difficult not to throw something at the television when people started to say this could not have been predicted. Once again, thank you for helping people realize the humanity in those who could be considered monsters all too easily. Sincerely Rowan Ste. Julian

Mr. De Becker, Throughout the tragic events of yesterday, I thought of the warnings you included in your book, "The Gift of Fear." I recall that you did not feel that our airports were safe from terroristic threats, and that the security measures in place were greatly inadequate. Unfortunately, your observations proved correct. I am sure that you are as horrified as the rest of the country at the atrocity of the numerous terrorist attacks on our nation in yesterday's early morning hours. I would be very interested to know your thoughts and suggestions regarding this tragedy. I respect your insights, and I was wondering if you could, when time permits, write about your observations and opinions regarding one of our nation's darkest days on your website. I understand that you are most likely extremely busy right now, but I would greatly appreciate it. Your books have been of great benefit to many people, and I believe that the American people need guidance on how to take control of the fear that has developed in the aftermath of these horrible events. Thank You.

Hi all... One of my good friends, Shannon McNamara was murdered this past June. From what we know, the individual was not known to her, but after reading this book I wonder if there warning signals. They caught the assailant and it's in court now so access to info is difficult. Shannon and I were Alpah Phi sorority sisters...she was one of the girls in our association that simply glowed with life. Since her death, I have gotten involved with the American Womens' Self Defense Association and trained at their annual conference at the Sig Arms Academy in New Hampshire. I am now a certified Rape Prevention Instructor and I've started a program called Girls Fight Back that teaches young women how to defend themselves. The thing about Shannon's murder is that she really kicked the guy's ass...when they caught him he had cuts and bruises all over him. May we all fight like she did!!! Thank you, Gavin and the Gang, for teaching me to trust my intuition and for allowing me to walk into my apartment after work and not haveto check all the closets.

Recently, I was assaulted by a man I had been dating for approx. 2 yrs. There were plenty of ongoing signals that I read about in your book 'The Gift of Fear'. Chapter 4 sounded like his autobiography as each tactic he had used and used well. I followed through with criminal charges against him and have since found out that I was not the first woman with which he had been violent. But I am the only one that pressed charges. As a high school teacher, coach, and certified instructor with American Combatives.com, I was extremely impressed with the information available. Self-defense begins with aviodance of an attack, and the information provided in these books can be adapted to most situations that one could encounter. I will defintely use this information in classes that I teach to teachers and other groups that I speak to concerning self-protection. If you have any ideas about how I could best incorporate your work with my self-defense training, please let me know.

I just bought THE GIFT OF FEAR, and having only read the first fifty pages I am completely hypnotized. This book is well written, speaks to the reader, and is inspiring to me on a personal level because I am now considering going into this kind of work, where as before I was set on becoming a Judge or Senator. Either way though, this book is a tool for many and all people, and I feel it a shame most ordinary citizens will never have the opportunity of discovering this treasure of knowledge.

Ms. McKenzie, Thank you for you comments in our guest book about the assassination of William Goebel of Kentucky. If my memory serves me, William Goebel was not the Governor when he was shot. The election initially went to William Sylvester Tyler and Tyler was sworn in as the Governor. The election was appealed and death threats were made that if Goebel won he would be assassinated. Apparently, the assassin wasn't taking any chances and shot him before the court's decision was rendered. Goeble won and was sworn in on his death bed. That leads to the idea that when he was shot, he was not the governor, but when he died he was. Are my facts correct? For sure, it is interesting folklore. If the subject of assassination of public figures interests you, there is a great book currently available on the subject: "Dodging Bullets" by Tom Taylor. Tom is a Lieutenant with the Missouri Highway Patrol and one of the most knowledgeable people in the country (if not the world) on attacks of public figures. Dodging Bullets - A Strategic Guide to World-Class Protection, is available from the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) in Florida, and can be ordered from their web site at http://iptm.org/store.htm or by calling (904) 620-4786. I teach a psychology and the law course to college undergraduates and found "The Gift of Fear" incredibly informative and helpful in preparing certain lectures. Incidentally, I believe there was a governor shot and killed while in office...Goebel, of Kentucky. He was shot after being elected but before being sworn in; officials managed to swear him in while he lay on his deathbed, before the "real" swearing in date...he then died, after serving only a few days, but he is considered a governor of Kentucky. These comments are in response to page 87 of "The Gift of Fear", section that no governor was killed while in office...not sure this applies, but it's interesting folklore nonetheless.

Every woman and man alive should read the "Gift of Fear" - there is no protection except that which you provide yourself... Parents of America: please don't encourage your kids hang with the rich, famous and powerful, nor the needy, criminal, and scary... This is just sensible - read the book, trust your insticts and talk to your kids well in advance of these circumstances... Start now, give them confidence...trust your guts - it means more than you realize and they should be educated - they will be street-wise before you know it...and you should hope for this...

Firstly, let me say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book, "The Gift of Fear". As a professional security officer, the book gave me some insight into the persona that the people out there are actually dealing with, and the issues that arise. Luckily for us, things here are much quieter. Curious, what kind of license does it take to do what it is that you all do? I am interested in going beyond the normal security genre, although I probably won't be doing significant threat management. Are you a bodyguard agency, or a Private Investigative firm, or is there another category that you operate under? Again, I enjoyed the book completely, and will be looking out for "Protecting the gift".

Before I was given your book, I was every chapter of it. There are people that think that I sell your book. Well,in a way I do. I,also, give it away often. I was married to a very high ranking police officer.Even if I had not been a victim, I would have been enriched by reading it. Aftre 39 broken bones, a dead son (suicide) and being stalked forever, or so it seemed, I was able to escape. Sounds like just another one of those stories that are used to explain why MY life is better now. Not the case. I did indeed, escape over and over again. I traveled incognito until I wondered who I was. One day while I sat at a table at a friends house, my now ex husband came through the door and walked right by me,to their answering machine. He listened to messages and then left. I was dumbfounded to say the least. My friend said that she knew that he was going to do that. I asked how. She said, that is what she would have done. Confused, later that day I met a dear friend of mine, who also happened to be a psychiatrist. He had practiced for almost 50 years. I asked him to teach me to be like my husband. He shook his head and said these chilling words,He will kill you. He is dangerous, and that I should leave once again. I had stayed with him and his family and probably every relative that I could think of and been hunted down like a dog. What would make this time different. He gave me THE GIFT OF FEAR. I had read and volunteered and knew it all, all except how to get away. I had already lost my 16 yr old to suicide(over a girl and a hundred other things),but I still had one son to go. He wanted to stay in Upstate New York. I read this book anyway, since I trusted Doc. I found out all that I needed to know.Today, I am free. At least on paper. Oh he continues to be a threat, but now I have the necessary knowlege to try to stay free. The answers are not all in the book,as it explains. They are in you and your thoughts and methods of handling fear.I have learned to trust my judgement, and to pay attention to my friend FEAR.My ex-husband now is an anesthesiologist. He was ALLOWED to retire from his State trooper career, and became even more of a menace. He deleted my medical records, constantly carried out every intimidation plan that he could think of. I just kept going and read the book over and over again. The final straw came when I unfortunately got very sick while trying to see my son. I had to have emergency surgery. GUESS WHO CAME TO THE OR!!! Yep, it was him.The 98% perfect human being was going to be my anethesiologist. In my semi-medicated state, I had them give me forms to refuse him and hoped that I would wake up after surgery. Scary,Huh? I used the book again.I had no choice, this was an emergency. I knew that in Whos Who 1975 this was his original career choice. Based upon all that I could remember, he could just finally go over the edge. All of the stories, examples gien were very effective, but none seemed to fit this scenario. What to do? I went through the PINS, and came to the conclusion that I was more likely to die from not having surgery, than I was to die from him. He would not like a "death" on his record, and surely not his ex wife. Tossed the dice and went for it. The point that I am making is that the answers are sometimes in the questions, which brings me to this conclusion. Had I not read this book, surely I would have parished. I now help others escape, and in their bags(complimentary road kits for victims)there is a copy of THE GIFT OF FEAR. I am sure that this email would not be being written if I had not read it. A HUNDRED THOUSAND THANK YOUS, CJ

I became aware of Mr. De Becker's book, "The Gift of Fear" after seeing him on The Oprah Show. I was being stalked and harrassed at the time by my soon-to-be-ex-husband. I had received no help from my local police department and I felt like the situation was hopeless. After reading the book, I found some very practical and sensible solutions to the situation and a better understanding of how to react and why. I followed the suggested actions in the book and with time, my ex-husband gave up and moved on. I was also having a great deal of difficulty trusting my own intuition and judgement. I found the information presented within the book helped me to develop my intuition and trust myself again. I know that I have made much better choices and decisions because of the knowledge gained through this book. What were once new ideas, are now part of who I am and how I interact with the world. I extend my sincere gratitude to Mr. De Becker for writing such a book and for making this information so accessible to all who need it. You are saving lives!

I have read both of GdB's books in the hope of keeping myself and my family safe though prevention and prediction. The books have helped me feel secure within myself, knowing I have the power to prevent violence. I never really expected to actually come face to face with the very specific situations in the books. However, I have just discovered that a friend is being stalked. This has been going on for the past 7 years, and as I discovered today, has recently started escalating as described in the books. No one seems to grasp the seriousness of this situation, especially as the man is "a nice guy " ! I have tried to express my horror of her situation without terrifying her, and without seeming overly dramatic. I have given her my copy of "The Gift of Fear" and have faith that your words will convince her of the danger she and her children could be in. Thank you for providing me with the tools to help her.

I came across you book "Gift of Fear" by accident when it was donated to the Homeless Shelter where I tutor children. I read it in 1 day and returned it so others could receive the invaluable knowledge it contains. I immediately ordered a copy to pass on to my grown daughters and intend to give copies as gifts. Since I was raised in Detroit, I understand the intuition of fear. This intuition has not been as prevelant since I now live in a small town.I will soon be moving to Phila. and I'm sure these skills will again kick into action. This book helped me realize what I took for granted. Also how important it is to instill positive reinforcement in our children.

Thank you, Gavin. An amazing and gripping book. I read it 3 years ago, left an abusive relationship after 10 years. Used my intuition, as defined by this wonderful book, to assist in finding a better relationship. Without looking, really, I found it - no red flags. We're getting married in July, 2001. I am so happy, the book was just the first step to the identification of my own cognizant awareness. I just purchased 8 copies at Barnes & Noble, yesterday, to donate to the Domestic Violence Resource Center in Washington County. The 8 lives they touch will be blessed. Once touched by me, it has blessed four-fold of my friends. I hope these copies do the same to others. A gift I give to those I find in need. I added a link to your page, from my DV Awareness page. Feel free to stop by the site anytime.. you will find the DV portion under "Of Mind..." Thanks again. Chicula

Greetings. I am a single mother of two sons ages 15 and 5. Read both books ... exellent! I'm in security for Washington Mutual Bank, so "security" and safety are part of my work and definitely part of my personal life. I've always admired people with a well developed sense of intuition and "commom sense". Since living alone with my kids, I quickly got over being scared (on my own) and no longer worry about everything. Again, the books are excellent and I recommend them as often as possible to friends and family. I would even love to work for your organization. I'm an administrative assistant with much experience.

I read your book expecting it to be the antithesis of what I felt fear was about (being a gift). I talk about fear in my book I am writing tenatively called Fear Theory. I am on the same wavelength it turns out, I usually state, "there is nothing to fear unless you are dying or about to die." My book focuses on the other type of fear: anxiety caused by uncertainty. The book is a wonderful exposition on real fear vs. anxiety. Thanks for lending your expertise to the field, a book I will definetely recommend highly. Cindylee A. Ginter, M.Ed.

(Re-posting this in hopes it will be formatted better)...

I really value Mr. De Becker's books and have recommended them to a lot of people. No doubt they have helped people save their own lives. But I am troubled by your apparent stance on guns. Here's what you said about guns:
http://www.familyeducation.com/experts/advice/0,1183,24-8695,00.html

I fully support the concept of not letting your child sleep over at a house where guns are kept CARELESSLY, as they apparently are in that home. Every gun store sells and encourages the use of gun safes; the parents in that home, for whatever reason, saw no need to keep their guns in a safe. That fact--that the parents don't respect the power of guns or the curiosity of teenage boys--is the reason I wouldn't let any child of mine spend time in their home.

But you used your response as a venue to rail against gun manufacturers, rather than against irresponsible gun owners. Manufacturers are covered by the same product liability laws as every other company in this country--and that's not even the issue here. Yes, guns "could have components that inhibit firing by children, or technologies that allow operation only in the hands of the owner"--just as cars could drive themselves from coast to coast, or robots could make your breakfast for you: there are researchers working on those technologies right now (my partner is one of them), but they are in the prototype phase at best--they're not on the market because they don't yet work.

A couple of inventors have web sites selling security gadgets for specific models of guns--if you want to trust your life to some inventor's experimental gadget, be my guest, but until such devices have been perfected, responsible gun owners rely on two things: (1) gun safes, for guns they are not carrying; and (2) their own vigilance, for the gun currently in their belt holster.

Your specialty is showing people how to protect themselves. Despairing that gun manufacturers don't yet make the guns of the future, with all their security devices, is not a way in which anyone can protect themselves. Keeping guns in locked storage safes, and not letting your children spend time in homes where guns are stored irresponsibly, is such a way. How does it empower anyone to blame an inanimate object for violence, when the blame belongs to irresponsible parents?

I work with victims of domestic violence and rape survivors. Part of the healing process is teaching them how to listen to there inner selfs. If only these woman were taught how to do this when they were children, they may not have been someones victim. Thank you so very much for your wonderful presentation.

I just finished "The Gift of Fear." It was recommended to me, and very much lived up to the good review my friend gave it. I know that listening to my instincts is important. Years ago, I was in a potential rape situation. I listened to my instincts and reacted in a way that I otherwise would not have. To my surprise (on later analysis) I was fearful, but very alert and not at all panicked. As a result,I escaped without harm. Mr. De Becker's extensive experience in this area has validated and expanded on my belief in reacting to instinct. Now, my sister is in a scary situation. She's a mid-level manager at a company nearby. There's an unstable employee there who exhibits all the signs of a scriptwriter. He irrationally blames my sister for all his problems, real and imagined. When I gave her the book, she opened it to the chapter on occupational hazards, the section on scriptwriters, and said her hair nearly stood on end. The book described this employee perfectly. I hope the knowledge gained from this book will help her avoid a potentially serious situation.

Thank you for writing such an inspiring book. I am a survivor of Domestic Violence and wouldn't be alive today if not for following my 'gut feeling.' It had been difficult for me to explain how I knew what was about to happen, but your book helped me make sense of it all. Your book, The Gift of Fear, was recommended to me during my recovery from my abusive marriage and divorce. It has taken me several years to put my life back together and now I am happily married to a wonderful man and we together share 5 children. My past now only exists in memories. Your life is also an inspiration. I decided to use my experience, pain, and first hand knowledge of domestic violence to help others. I should finish my degree soon and begin counseling. Reading about your life story and how it helped you to become better personally and professionally today, truly is inspiring. Thank you. Please give hope to other women that are fighting to survive and let them know, that there are happy endings.

I found your book very interesting and educational...I am a paramedic and my husband is a police officer....we must rely on a "gut" instinct every day we do the job, without not knowing why until later. I ignored the "gift" on what came in as a routine call and got caught with my partner in a house with a mentally ill man, who practiced self mutilation, and happened to be holding a large butcher knife and not wanting to go to the ER , or let us out of the house... Yet, I knew "something" was wrong before I stepped foot on the property. After reading your book a few years later and recalling the incident, I was able to understand now, the little things that made me uneasy, that I didnt see at the time....I have given this book to family, friends and now my daughter to read....and, unfortuneatly, I still remember the 3 fake warning signs of a kangaroo attack!! thank you for making me more street smart and empowered! :)

As I have sadly learned, my situation is a common one. My husband sexually abused our children. He no longer lived with us. When I started speaking out about the abuse, he threatened to take the children. When he tried to take them, I tried to stop him, unfortunately with a knife. I stabbed him once in the chest and am currently serving five years probation for felony assault. Since the children were present, I was also charged with neglect and lost custody to their father. All of the experts involved in the case are convinced the sexual abuse never happened. The children were young and do not remember. To complicate matters my husband is an administrator in social services and has known exactly what to do and say throughout the investigation. I have been advised to stop talking about the abuse because I can't prove it. For the last eighteen months, I have had supervised visitation once a week with the children. Every effort has been made by their father to exclude me from their lives. I am no longer in a position to protect them. The level of manipulation the children innocently live with is frightening. I have tried every available resource both before and after the assault. I don't know if there is anything left for me to do. I love them and I am finding it impossible to give up, yet, I feel completely powerless. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I am a Catholic priest, and people often assume me to be on call 24/7. The Gift of Fear and Protecting the Gift helped me get a handle on how I was being manipulated and made my life much happier. In addition, it raised my consciousness on how women are treated in this society, which I now often address in my preaching. I recommend the books to everyone and often buy copies for people I know. Gavin de Becker's insights are so commonsensical as to make reading him seem more like recognizing the truth than discovering it. Thanks.

i dont know if this is the correct forum but i has been eating at me for some time. I know a Guy that is an admited sexual offender. He did some nasty things to his Step daughter on more then once and was caught and admited it on the record. the girl was 7 years old. Now years later he did it again only this time he did it to a lady on my block who is mentally retarted! She is an adult by age but is a child mentaly and could never give consent! I feel this is the same thing as if he as raped a child and it has been bugging me for a long time now as this lady has said some things that I found to sicken me I also have a tape of a message she left on his answering machine where she talks about how she cant wait to see him again and other things that lead me to think it was going on for a while. Is there a Crime here? and who should i contact. Calling the lapd seems to be a waste of time. And seeeing that this person is by age an adult is it a crime? If anyone knows the andwer could you please contact me Via e-mail as soon as possible! i Fear that he could be doing this kind of thing now i worry about what he could do!

Hi, I'd like to say that your comments on paintball are absolutely hilarious. I'm 14 and I'm a paintballer, for your information. I've played since I was 11 and the sport has never sprung up the idea, "Hey, this is fun. We should do this with real guns against unexpecting civilians!" Maybe you should look into the sport more and it may change your mind. Paintball is one of the safest sports out there and I am outraged that you say it gives teenagers the idea to kill people with real guns. The most imphasized thing in paintball is SAFETY, if you think it's unsafe. It's obvious that you know almost nothing about it and here you are preaching to people that don't know anything about it how it shouldn't be around. If you ever go on a paintball chatroom or message board, you can see how many people are pissed off that you and other people are telling complete lies about our beloved sport.

Dear Mr. De Becker: As a victim of stalking, I want to personally thank you from the bottom of my heart for the most educational and imformative book,"The Gift of Fear" . I was very happy to know that there is someone out there that really cares about us victims. We have to make the public aware and law enforcement aware of the significance of the crime stalking. We need to better educate the law enfocement on the internal damage as well as the external damage that stalking can do to a person and their family. It's a crime that is repeated over and over and over and never seems to have a end at times. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, for makeing me feel a little safer to know somewhat how to read these type of criminals. Keep up the work and never give up on us out here. God Bless

Dear Mr de Becker, I have been re-reading "Protecting the Gift" for the past year. This has been one of the most useful, easy to read, easy to understand books I've had the opportunity to experience. I learn more each time I read it! I recommend this book to everyone who lives with children, works with children or has the chance of keeping a child safe -- direct caregivers, parents, state elected officials, social workers, other professional contacts I have in other states. I've used information from your book in working with and training our agency's social workers and in providing training and guidance to childcare providers. Thank you for writing this book!

First, I have to thank Kelly and You, Gavin, and my best friend's mother, Ouida. She sent me "The Gift of Fear" after meeting me this spring. Ouida noticed that I live life on the edge, sometimes wreckless. More often than not, I knew when I ignored my intuition, and noted it right after I ignored it. Something as simple as putting a glass of wine on coffee table instead of the dining room table would result in a red wine stain on the floor. When your book arrived in the mail, I started reading very intently, Kelly's story really grabbed my attention. However, two jobs and summer fun took precidence over reading your book. I do believe that the part that I had read saved my life, or at least my sanity through a rape in my apartment on September 17, 2000. I continue to replay the events of that night and the events leading up to that night, and the further I read in your book, the more I can see the signs that I chose to ignore. By wanting to be a stronger woman, I put myself in danger. That cost me a night of true fear, physical harm, and a hard lesson learned. I am not afraid of being attacked again, I feel that I am more aware. My father once told my brother (when he was threatening to tell on me for something)that the threat of telling on me was worse than anything I had done. I remember hearing him tell my brother "Instilling fear in someone is the worst thing you can ever do." He was right. At first, I was afraid that I couldn't fight off my attacker after he dislocated my shoulder. Comments that he made led me to believe that I would be raped no matter what I said or did (since I couldn't fight with one arm dislocated and a much stronger assailent). Once I accepted the fact that I was going to be raped, I then was afraid that I would be killed. I knew my attacker (as most women do), and he knew that I could identify him. Using comments that he made, and things I knew about him, I didn't feel that he would kill me, but I didn't know how I would get away from him. When he got off me, pulled up his pants and said, "Well, uh, I gotta go." I knew he was leaving me alive, my fear told me not to attack him like my anger wanted me to do, but to wait until he left. If I heard him go into my kitchen, I was prepared to lock myself in the bedroom where I had a phone and a window to escape from (even though I lived on the second floor and there was no fire escape). As soon as I heard the door close, I ran to lock it. While I had my hands on the lock, he was trying to get back in, and I still don't know his motive. When I called my family members to tell them what happened, my first words were, "I'm okay, but something has happened." Physically, I was okay, mentally was another story. I still wake up every day and notice how beautiful the sky is, or how nice the wind feels blowing across my face, or how beautiful the leaves of fall can be. I am thankful for the things that I have, and I don't live in fear. Fear is the worst thing anyone can live with. I can only embrace life, and thank everyone who has enhanced it. Your book not only saved me in a defining moment of my life, but has helped me to understand what I can do to prevent terrible events like the one I have lived through. I still have some emotions that I cannot place yet, but when people ask me how I'm doing, I can only answer honestly, "More often than not, I'm okay, but sometimes, I am overwhelmed and I don't know what to do." I do know that I want to say thank you. Every day I wake up, I want to thank you and Kelly. Please wake up knowing that what happened to me could very easily have overcome my life, I think that by understanding more, I am released of the pain sitting inside me. Thank you forever!!

Never before have I been so moved by a book as to tell everyone within shouting distance of the words of wisdom I have found in it. Hello. I keep popping by to see if a position opens in your non-protective division. My wife and I had the great and distinct pleasure of seeing Mr. deBecker speak at the NOVA conference in Los Angeles in 1999, and called up the website as soon as we returned home. There was a position available and my wife was excited by the opportunity. She quickly sent her resume, which was warmly received. In the process of completing the application, she received a second letter explaining that the position had been filled. We were both surprised and delighted at the second letter; the fact that you would perform such a consideration was amazing and only impressed us further. Of course we were disappointed that the opportunity never bore fruit... Keep up the great work; we continue telling people about "The Gift of Fear" and your valient and unfortunately neccesary work.

Mr. DeBecker, I have read and reread "The Gift of Fear" and recommended it to those I work with in both my principle field; clinical psychology and a classical martial arts study group. I have been looking for your opinion on the issue of the so-called "counterphobic personality style" that can be developed by victims of violence... that is; the compulsive need to repeatedly seek out situations of danger in order to reassure oneself (unconsciously)that he or she has not lost his nerve. The dangers of this behavioral pattern are obvious, yet it is so common a pattern among ex-soldiers, policemen, firemen etc, and extends to street people, rape victms, barroom brawlers, etc that I hope to be able to refer my patients and students to your comments on this. Would you kindly respond. Thank you. Paul

I'm looking for anyone currently using a MOSAIC in southern New Jersey. Only one local PD has an old DOS version, and I am looking for an updated version for a demo. I have people interested in the tool who want to see it in use. I am in Atlantic County and willing to travel. Second issue - strategies for responding to objections to using the tool. For example, a city counsel/legal rep who states that the information provided by the tool on a specific individual causes the responding personnel to treat the person differently, and is therefore, predjudicial. I have a strategy meeting March 26 and would appreciate any serious suggestions prior to my meeting. What objections have others heard to using the system, and how have they overcome these objections? Thanks. -AG

Dear Sir, Not many books have made me call, tell or e-mail friends to let them know of a "must read". Your 2 books are some of the most logical reading that I have had the pleasure (maybe not always pleasure) to read. Thank you for this "heads-up" writing on topics that we all are concerned about but just don't seem to want to look at. Thanks for giving me your insights in this book. I hope that with this knowledge my wife and I can raise our two sons to be caring adults who show respect, anticipate those who don't and know the meaning of the word "no" when someone says it to them. The Gift of Fear and Protecting the Gift should be manditory reading for having children. I thank our government in Canada for having some form of gun laws but enfortunately no one can pass a law against stupidity (ie. drunk driving, drugs, peer pressure, inappropriate use of a gun, etc.) All that I can say is thanks. My wife and I will do our best. Sincerely, Steve Ditmore

I just recently heard that de Becker was hired by Nicole Kidman in her divorce against Tom Cruise. Smart move on her part, mostly because of the Church of Scientology's reputation on intimidating anyone who tries to leave the "church", and she and her children are going to need all the protection they can get. May I suggest to Mr. de Becker that he check out the website www.xenu.net for more information and resources on the Church of Scientology and on the case of Lisa McPherson, who died in 1995 in the Florida headquarters under their "care" after a minor car accident?

Hi: I read and have kept the article which was reproduced in the June 1997 Glamour magazine. I work at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in the Professional Education Department. I plan and coordinate continuing education programs for healthcare professional, physicians, nurses, social workers, EMS, etc. I am in the process of planning a Pediatric Conference for September 21 and wanted to find out if you could present with the emphasis being on teaching youth about preventing stalking. What would the honorarium fee be, are you available, what time fram would be necessary for this audience? There is a very good possibility that we would partner with the Siouxland Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence to bring you to Siouxland. We might also want to do a parent prgram and maybe go into the schools with this message. Thank you for your response to this inquiry. Sincerely, Pam L. Banks, Specialist, Professional Education

Hello There, I have just watching a program on Gavin deBecker's Mosaic program. My facination with the program is directly related to the work I do. Over the past five years I have been manageing a skill training and employment program for women who experience labour market barriers as a result of domestic and/or family violence. In a one year period approximately 150 women will attend our 26 week program. The organization that administers this program is DECS. Along with my program, eight other programs are provided as well. Annually, approxmately 2500 to 3000 individuals will attend a DECSA program. While my program deals with domestic and family violence specifically, the issues and concerned with either are highly evident in all of our programs. As you are well aware, the risks in dealing with any form of violence can be serious for victims and professionals or organizations working in the field. I have been through your web site and have read The Gift of Fear. I am currently looking for contacts and resources that may assist my program and organization with providing training for employees. I would also like to reveive information on the Mosaic program and if possible an opportunity to individuals currently using the program. Thank you for your support, I look forward to hearing from you Darrel Regehr

I have re-read your book "The Gift of Fear" for the third time now. Once again I am amazed by the tiny signals that you point out. After two and a half years in an abusive relationship, I viewed all males as dangerous animals to keep away from. With the help of your book I now know what to look for. The offer of getting a cup of coffe after work no longer sends up red flags. Thank you!

When I first read "The Gift of Fear" I wanted to know how Mr. De Becker got into my head. His book touched parts of my life that I was not fully aware of until reading this book. In his writings I became aware of how "The Gift of Fear" had influenced my decisions on many occassions. Thank you for writing this book. I hope that it helps others as much as it helped me.

I am a crime prevention specialist who cannot recommend your work highly enough! Prior to reading your book, The Gift of Fear, I was robbed while holding a canister of tear gas in my hand--with my thumb on the trigger! I didn't realize I was "doing" personal safety, not "being" safe as I ignored and discounted the numerous warning signals going off in my body. My 11 year old daughter was with me. When she was about 16, I nagged my daughter for months to read your book, of course she wouldn't. When she finally did, she couldn't put it down. This weekend, she's now 18, she said she needs to reread it because there was so much in it. She recounted how a few months after I was robbed she witnessed another woman being robbed. At age 11 years she was playing in the front yard near the sidewalk when 2 men walked past. She made eye contact with one of them and "knew" she needed to get away from him, although she didn't know why. A few seconds later she looked up to see him hit and push the woman he had been following from the local corner store, to take her money. My daughter wants to move to New York City someday. Although we live in inner-city Minneapolis, as her mother, I will feel much better if I know she rereads, and heeds, the important information shared in your books. I recommend your book to coworkers and community residents all the time. Keep up the good work!

I just finished reading the Gift of Fear. It was well written and I must say that I agree with all Mr. DeBecker said. I was in an abusive relationship and found the strength to get out. The word "hope" mentioned in the chapter pertaining to spouse abuse, is the one thing that keeps a woman from leaving. Along with the fact that you don't want to beleive that you have become a statistic. But I decided I'd rather be a statistic for women who made it, than women who died at the hand of their spouse. I am doing great now. It was the best decision I ever made. My ex and I get along (surprisingly), but I don't take any grief from him. I can say "no", and he knows it. I am in the process of becoming a speaker for the Crisis Center. My goal is to inform high school girls, it begins there; but, it can also end there. Education is the key. Thank you for the resources available to learn more.

As a veteran of 20 years of law enforcement, 8 years as a Crisis Negotiator, with training from the FBI and LAPD, I am a fan of Gavin deBecker. His insight and articulation of the intuitive fear we, as animals, can tap into and the sharing of that with the public at large has done a great service to humanity. I am a keen observer of human nature and I believe in the study of human behaviour to unlock clues to predict future outcomes. I am now seeking to share my insight, experiences and knowledge to assist people through my own company, obviously on a much smaller scale than Gavin de Becker! Thank you for The Gift of Fear and Protecting the Gift.

Ann Landers said last week that abusive men are often charming to others. She's right. My older brother was emotionally, physically and sexually abusive. I hated and feared being left alone with him, which our parents did frequently. From a young age we had no babysitters. The summer of 1976 we were 17 and 20 and alone for a couple of weeks while our parents were in another state. During an argument my brother pinned me down, put his hands on my throat and pushed down sharply several times. He held back enough not to cause actual injury but he could have snapped my neck like a twig if he chose. As soon as I got away I called the police. Two young male cops responded. They heard my story and then my brother, who had come outdoors to tell his side. I was standing there with tears streaming down my cheeks, I told them I wanted to press charges, but beyond a token lecture they sided with him. They asked what I was so upset about and left, one of them calling my brother by his first name, assuring him they would be in the area if needed. I was left feeling like the criminal. I wonder how the police treat a teenage girl reporting her brother nowadays. When you talk about battered wives and girlfriends, please remember that there are battered *sisters* out there too.

To:Gavin de becker inc. I am incredibly impressed with what I have read in the books "The gift of fear" and "Protecting the gift". I feel extremely passionate about the issues of learning to empower your self and intuition. I have recommended your books to everyone and I am constantly passing on the knowledge that I have learned to my family and friends(to the point where I am starting to sound like some kind of religious fanatic, trying to convert the masses.) But in all seriousness I constantly see the need for the information in your books to be available to everyone. When ever I see something on the TV news/newspaper ect. Involving a molester,staker,murderer... I think of what could have been prevented if the victim/target in the situation would have known more about listening to their intuition and warning signs. So I am wondering what line of work can I go into where I can help people on a daily basis learn how to protect themselves? I know that you are all extremely busy people but if there is any way that I could get some advise on what you think the best ways to help people for a living are I would really appreciate your impute. of course any information about your firm and the necessary steps one would take to qualify for any type of employment would be of extreme interest as well. Thank you very much, Sara Siegel

I highly recommend Mr. deBecker's book "Gift of Fear" as a starting point for considering the development of strategies to proactively reduce the risk of violence in most settings (home, work, out in public). I've been beating the drum for proactive planning against workplace violence where I work, and have found our employees to be truly valuing this information. I start out by asking them "When you are at your desk and have a customer/client sitting across from you, who is closer to the door, you or them?" the answer is almost always, "them." Then I ask, "Is that your best plan?" The answer is obvious. I am now including this information in my education programs on "Customer Service" and "Communication and Conflict." I also include this in my presentations at the local community college program for Job Readiness, which addresses residents on welfare and those recently released from prisons. My experience has been that people in these populations frequently lack higher-level communication skills, and non-violent responses to conflict. I've had participants who were previously incarcerated tell me that if they had known this information earlier, it would have changed how they conducted themselves in difficult situations, and perhaps, they would have acted in a way that wouldn't have earned them a stay at the State facilities. Makes you wonder if it's not something we should look into with regards to teaching young children these skills as part of their daily class work. It's something to consider. In closing, I'd like to thank Gavin deBecker and all of his talented associates for the huge body of work they have undertaken in developing tools to enhance our intuition (the MOSAICS). Bless all of you at deBecker for caring about all of us. Sincerely, Alice Guy, Corporate Educator

I was raised in a family with an abusive father and a highly volatile environment. The Gift of Fear is the only book I have ever read that really touched those repressed memories and emotions that related directly back to the years at home. I couldn't put the book down because I know that the ability I have had to to remove myself from certain situations throughout my life have been directly attributable to the survival lessons and intuition I learnt subconsciously all those years ago. Thankyou for writing a book that can touch in to those levels of the human psyche.

Just finished reading 'Protecting the Gift'. Read 'Gift of Fear' last year upon all the positive remarks about it from my dad. He kept insisting I read it & when Protecting the Gift came out, he insisted I read that as well. Both were amazing. I have two little girls & am so much more aware of things now & will be giving these books to them to read as they get older. I already taught our 3 yr old that if she is ever lost to go to a woman!! I am just so impressed by your books, especially Protecting the Gift. All I can say is thank you so much. There are so many things you write about that are so logical but people would have never thought of them. I have learned how to protect myself & my kids better now & appreciate that!! I have talked about these books to everyone I know in hopes that they will all read them (& am getting pretty successful at it-almost everyone has bought the book now!) I think everyone who has kids or works with kids should read 'Protecting the Gift' as it is so AWESOME. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it & learned from it! I will be buying that one for some friends who have kids this xmas!! Anyway, thank you for writing these books.

I just wanted to send a big thank you for your book, "The Gift of Fear". I am a professional musician that cannot afford security at this time and have found your book extremely useful in various situations. Recently, I moved away from my home in KS to Chicago with my band and we found out that the group of people we moved in with were a cult of a sort. Through the use of your book, I have been able to keep myself from harm and have since been able to move with my band out of the situation. I am going to send your book to a member who seems to want out but is extremely afraid to try to get away...I hope it helps her as much as it helped me. This book also helped me from engaging in violent defensive behaviors myself with a person in the group who was trying to control me. I strongly believe in using your intuition and also not letting people see that they are affecting your emotions adversely. This book has helped me deal with this situation as positively as possible. I have not decided whether or not to take this to court or not.......I have plenty of reason, but I think that it might hurt the person in the group that I am trying to empower to leave...... Regardless, thank you for sharing your insights and experiences in such a readable format! (-:

Why I ask offer this man release, He looked right at me in court and smiled, I know it is not over, I am so scared for my life, they gave me your book to read The Gift of Fear and I learned so much in this book I saw so much of myself in this book. I wanted to tell you it was a great help and if you know of any other ways for me to stay safe and keep my children safe please help me. Mr. de Becker, I am a seminary student researching how clergy can act and react when abuse happens in the congregation. It seems that all the old rules go down the drain, even the idea of counseling as a couple -- generally, the abuser goes home and beats up the abused after the pastor is brought in. Are you addressing how clergy can help in current or future works?

De Becker is apparently an impeccable modern man living the ancient warrior code found in many, many traditional societies around the world. Protect the continuation of society, specifically, by protecting the children. It is both a functional role as well as spiritually grounded in compassion and service to others, particularly those who cannot themselves stop evil. This warrior role was abandoned by our society and we now are experiencing the detrimental results. His books are outstanding. As I have a degree in Anthropology and work as a Police Officer, I greatly admire his erudition, realism, and knowledge of the complete spectrum of the human being i.e., the biological basis of intuition being hardwired into us. I commend any parent, any person, who makes it his/her role in life to stand between innocence and evil. Thank you.

I have a question for anyone who might be able to answer it. There are actions and mental beliefs that one has that has the capability of becoming violent in the future, correct? What if it's plainly obvious that one particular 21 yr old college student has the mentalities, fantasies and past actions (including killing small animals when he was younger because he "liked the power" it gave him) that puts him square in the 'time bomb waiting to go off' catagory? He knows he's really screwed up, and he hasn't done anything serious yet. YET being the key word. I know he has tried conventional counseling, however since it was short lived and I dont think the counselor was specialized in helping someone this far gone, nor at the time was he willing to be helped. My question is that since education is so heavily placed on determining people like this, what does one do? (other than nervously wait for the day when an interviewer asks when he started fantasizing about sitting on top of a roof and shooting people, and what was it that made him finally decide to do it?) Are there any very specialized mental health professionals that could help someone like this that anyone knows of that could help someone like this? I wish that I were over-reacting, and in fact I am out of this person's life upon my own request, eventhough I don't think I'm in any potential danger from him considering he has said, "I can't hurt someone I know, it has to be someone I don't know, and I don't want to know them." I do however know that I would feel intensely guilty if/when something happens to someone and I didn't just go through the effort of asking question. Any advice?

I briefly visited your site and will be spending more time here. We recently formed a non profit organization in New Jersey for the purpose of keeping convicted child molesters in prison for life without parole. We have come a long way in a short time. Our resolution has been written into a bill by Assemblyman Bateman and was presented to the Assembly and the Senate last week. We have over 5,000 signatures on petitions not to mention hundreds of letters to our Governer demanding life imprisonment. We have gained local support from newspapers, radio stations and from across the ocean with the BBC. They come to NJ to interview us and filmed a rally we held recently. We think your site would be ideal for us to link to as it may provide help for people who were abused and their families.

I just have a question....I have never had the pleasure of reading one of Mr deBecker's book...though I believe I will..they sound interesting.I did get to see a special on VH1,where Mr DeBecker spoke on celebrity killers/stalkers~I found the program very informative, and eye opening~I had NO idea that the problem was SO big! My question is..... If I write to a celebrity, and I am too friendly or "wordy",would that be considered wrong,or suspect in some way? I ask, because Mr DeBecker said in the VH1 special, something to the effect of"those types of letters bother him"~That struck me as kind of odd,as some people are friendly by nature, some are also overly chatty{my kids say I could make friends with anyone I meet in the street}. I consider myself open and friendly, probably from being raised in a small town....would this put me at risk to become a crime victim? Should I try to be less friendly...and if I should, wouldn't this tend to add to our growing violent, distrustful society? Soon,I will be going to college in a large village a good distance from m hometown~are there things I can do to keep myself safe while so far from home?I already have a personal alarm in my purse...is this enough?I will NOT carry weapons, though I do not wish to be a victim,I will not harm another human being! If the alarm is not enough, what else can I do? I want college to be wonderful and enriching...but I do admit I am kind of scared about being away from home.Besides weapons,or bringing my tall intimidating husband to school with me daily, what steps can I take to be safe, and have a happy college experience?

Hi, My boyfriend & I have been dealing with an ex-girlfriend that will not take no for an anwser. She seems to truley believe that God has brought him to her as a soul mate. This has been going on now for about 2 years since we have been together. It's getting a little old. She has gone as far as paging him constantly, and he had stopped returning her calls, so she would page for several different numbers. She tricked him before with a number, and asked the dentist where their office was, then went there. Saw that she missed him & my son, then said she was me aand agot access to my son's records to get my address & work number. She continued to my home, now we moved & constantly calls my job. Since she can't find him now, she just goes to his job at lunch and trys to cause probles there. She is very active in Church, 40 + years old and a nurse in a Hospital. I have never dealt with anyone like this. She dose'nt threaten us, we lost that in court twice. One for stocking & one restraing. Could you let me know your opinion? or maybe a suggestion on what to do? Thanks! Laura P.

Hello, I represent a collaboration of agencies in Dalton (a sister town to mine)and have been asked to contact Mr DeBecker to invite him to speak at a Violence Awareness Symposium being planned for January 2001. Our interest in having Mr DeBecker comes from our appreciation of his deep understanding of the very selective character of violent behavior; that it is seldom random, that it is almost always employed as a tool of power, and lies latent (or active) in all of us. The denial of our own violent capacity seems to be an essential aspect of how it then appears suddenly, as if it were unpredictable and why we are blind to it's signals. Our group believes that Mr DeBecker's ability to remind us of that deep truth would be invaluable to the large gathering we expect to have. A voice such as his might provide the reminder to us all that the capability for violence isnt in "them", it's in each of us and we must own it if we hope to resist it. I hope that there is some possibility for a speaking engagement though I feel I must be foolish to think his schedule could accomodate us (or us his fee); still, I hope you will reply and let me know what is possible.... Thank you very sincerely, Jim Sneary

I have been trying to convince my friend to read "The Gift of Fear" for over a year but she can't be bothered. She thinks I'm paranoid. This past weekend the two of us along with two other women were in a strange city for a sports tournament. A man followed one girl back to the motel from the bar. We were at first disturbed by him pounding on our door. I was looking out the peephole but he was careful to stay out of view. While the others stayed silent hoping he would just leave, I had the following conversation: "Who's there?" "Troy" "I don't know any Troy, Get lost" "Yes you do, open up" "I'm not opening this door, take a hike" "C'mon...." "Leave now or I'm calling the cops" He left. He returned an hour later and we woke up to him banging on the door and actually trying the door knob. Again I could see nothing in the peephole, he was off to the side waiting to pounce, and again the other girls were silent hoping he would go away. This was a very bold and very dangerous man, and I was scared but also livid (how dare he!) I got right up to that door and slammed my forearm into it, so the whole door shook, and followed it immediately with "F*** OFF A**HOLE! I told you before I'm calling the cops!" he started some verbal protest, which I cut off with "Shut Up! I'm calling the cops right now!" and at the same time I flipped on all the lights and grabbed the phone. Within 3 seconds we heard his car squealing out of the parking lot, and since it was that short of time I am sure that he wasn't alone, someone was waiting in a car for him to gain entry. During both of these episodes some part of me was thinking, "Where are these words coming from? I can't believe I'm doing this" but another part was thinking "I'm not opening this door, but if you break in here, you will be sorry." Because I read your book I knew the latter feeling was what I needed to stick with. Thank you. I never mentioned it to her, but my girlfriend has a week of holidays and I'm sure she will be doing some reading.

I thought you might like to know that for the past three years we have been using your book "The Gift of Fear" as our text book. I have had great success with it: we very much enjoy the information you so reasonably present. In fact, the girls enjoy it so much that they have begun to bring your ideas into their other classes. The English teacher informes me that, when reading about various romantic con artists, the girls have often called out "Oh, that's sooo 'Gift of Fear!'" At any rate, thank you for the book. I look forward to using it for many years to come. Sicerely with great appreciation, Marah Boyesen

Your book is very well done so I dropped by the site address given in your book to see what there was to see. Your site is very well done. Please keep up the good work.

I have read your book, The Gift of Fear twice already. This book should not only be required reading for students, teachers, and parents, but for every single police department across the US. As well as by judges that oversee these cases. Speaking as the current victim of an online/offline Cyberstalker, I can attest to the ignorance of these types of situations, not only by law enforcement officials, but those in government. If those who are supposed to protect us and enforce the laws are uninformed and ignorant, then we are lost. I speak from personal experience in dealing with law enforcement in my situation. This dangerous lack of understanding could cost a victim their life.

I read the gift of fear and protecting the gift. Every girl and women in the world should read them. I would like to put a copy of both in our library. I am the president of two neighborhood watch organizations and I am also a black belt in martial arts [wu wei gung fu] I've taught rape classes for over 20 years and I teach in away most do not. I've been trying to teach for years how women should fight for themselfs like they would for their children. I feel I have done well but still feel like something was missing.Your book protecting the gift was the key that unlocked my mind. Now I can go on to a new level. Growing up in a small town I still have seen alot of bad things, like I've said; crime is not going down in our country it is moving to small towns full of victims! We fight back well though. Like I said I thought I was pretty coarse since I haven't cried since I was a child but after I read Gift of fear and was almost done with"protecting the gift" I came to page 283. Betty Kregors story got me. A tear didn't roll down my cheek but I had to wipe my eyes to read on. Thank you.

I just want to thank Gavin de Becker for his wonderful books and insight. I have tried to incorporate as much of his wisdom in to my life as well as the lives of my family and friends as possible. I single handedly convinced eight other people to read the Gift of Fear, all of whom ended up buying their own edition after reading mine, which was a Christmas gift from my mother. thank you for helping me to fear less and to trust myself and my instincts more.

I am a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at a high school in North Dakota. I have read both of your books. They are excellent! The Gift of Fear was recommended to me by a former student. I now spend one class period each semester, in my Independent Living class, discussing your book and encouraging the students to read it. I think it should be mandatory reading material for all young women (men too, but especially women) who are leaving high school and ready to be on their own. I have told many people about your books and plan to continue to encourage others to read them also. Thank you so much for writing these wonderful books....I just loved reading them! I would just like to thank Mr. de Becker for writing "the gift of fear". I had the fortune of someone lending it to me about week after i had to obtain a restraining order. I've heard other stalking victims declare it "their bible" and i beleive that. Many times i referred to that book to give me strength, knowledge and insight to get me through the current situation. I've bought two copies, and given away two copies - to friends who i feel needed to read it. They have both thanked me and said how terrifing and interesting the book is. I am going to buy a third copy to keep by my side. My terror is over (my stalker is dead) but i will always remember the fear and trust my intuition. Thank you very much.

Sadly I have to admit that living in this country is one of the hardest things in my life, (I was born and raised in Mexico) and raising my son is a daily struggle explaining why certain things even if we see them in the news or street are not OK. Last year I read your book "Protecting the Gift"; it gave me a lot of insights and reinforced that I am not crazy or paranoid like my partner made me feel at times, of course he doesn't have to worry about safety so much, chances of him getting raped or abused as a grown man are very slim, but my son and me are in a totaly different scenario. Now one of my daily jobs is to teach my son to try and know people and listen to his "gutt", unfortunately society doesn't allow for boys or men to be as resceptive to their feelings.

I read "The Gift of Fear" a couple of years ago after it was suggested to me by a peer at work. I was in the business of teaching people how to be heads-up while on the street in all kinds of neighborhoods - mostly unknown and often potentially bad neighborhoods. After I read the book, I put it high on the suggested reading list and even bought copies for a few of my friends and instructors teaching for me. I am confident that De Becker's theories have made my people safer in the execution of their jobs - I know that I am beter prepared when I'm out there. THANKS!!!

Dear Mr. de Becker, Is the PSD the only entry level position available? If so, what are the requirements of the physical? I already have a degree in biopsychology and enough verbal acuity to get into MENSA. However, my body needs a lot of work (ie I lost 70 pounds but still have more to go). If you need any help evaluating those with autism, please let me know. I attended the SWASA convention recently. My intuition (which your vignette loaded very well) was further validated when I saw mistakes the so-called normal people made in their interactions with the autistic. I really want to use the abilities and limitations ( specifically, Asperger's syndrome) God gave me to help my fellow humans. I would even be willing to write about my personal experiences, which are quite different from those described in Protecting the Gift.

I suppose one should ask exactly how intuitive this system is. There is much commentary from your skeptics that in any situation with a large number of persons lodging complaints without fear of reprisal, this sort of situational software becomes an Orwellian facilitation. How does your system's implementation alleviate this issue? My parishoners are concerned about their childrens' saftey, and I have a responsibility to them, and their children. How do we avoid endangering the rights of the children involved and still involve the observations of the childrens' peers? Thank you for your time, Reverend Nathan H Dayton V

When I was a kid, commercials against child abuse were on television all the time. One of the first ones I ever saw came on during The Brady Bunch- a rather chilling juxtaposition. I was only 7 or 8 at the time, and when The Brady Bunch resumed after the commercial, I literally scrutinized those kids for signs of (WHAT????) child abuse. Little did I know that many of the kids at my school had those problems with the very people wholove them- their parents. Your Test of Twelve should be required reading for everybody. Unfortunately, not everyone is empowered to follow it, least of all little children.

I enjoyed reading "The Gift of Fear" so much that I immediately passed it on to my girlfriends and family. I have just started "Protecting the Gift" and, as with the previous book, I am completely astounded that I hadn't thought about the potential for risk as such a real possibility. I consider myself self-aware, and self-preserving so the fact that I hadn't had "a plan" was very disturbing to me. Now I realize that it isn't enough to avoid those dark parking lots, shop in the nice part of town etc. And especially where my children are concerned there were several things that I had simply brushed off as the doings of "over-protective" parents. You can be assured that I will consistently go out of my way to go the extra mile to be on guard and alert to those dangers. Not just for my child but also for others. I hope the thousands or millions of your other readers are doing the same. And yes, there is "safety in numbers." PLEASE keep up the great work!
