I've read "The Gift of Fear" and found it very informative. As a deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, I have used the information from several chapters to better understand the needs of victims of violent crimes, as well as to help others to better understand the potential dangers that may br in store for them. Thank you for the insight.

I found your site by browsing through Oprah's site page on past shows that she has done, and on Books that everyone should know about. I would very much like more information on prevention of any type of violence. I did not have time to look at all the useful information that was given but I will purchase your book "THE GIFT OF FEAR" when I get a chance. Thank you for all of this useful information. Dear Mr. De Becker I have read your book, The Gift of Fear, and am working on Protecting the Gift. Your books are wonderful! I have a child, and your books have really helped me gain a better understanding of my gift of intuition. I feel that I am a better parent because of it. Your books have been a great asset for me in the professional work that I do as well. Because I work with so many survivors of domestic violence and sexual asault, it is important for me to always help them to be able to tap in to what their intuition is telling them to do. I especially like your chapter in The Gift... on "intimate enemies". The protection order piece was great. Thank you

Dear Mr. de Becker! I read your book "The Gift of Fear". According my personal feeling about your book I agree with what most of the people on this page say. Now to my intention to write this letter: I am a member of the German scout Association (BdP, Bund der Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder). There is a very unique thing about the german scouts. The leaders of the groups are mostly young people between 14 and 18 years old. They are not very experienced in evaluating violent behaviour and violent behaviour of single persons is an increasing problem of our groups. Your book inspired me to develop a special training for this young group leaders to reckognize violent behaviour of children and improve the savety of the other children. I would be very thankfull if you can give me contacts in Germany where I can find more informations and help about this topic.

I have his e-mail address and have searched the engines so that I could get an address of his location. I have yet to find anything. She is in danger, this guy really beat her physically and emotionally in the past. Now he wants her life.

I'd like to have Mr. de Becker as a speaker, but even more than that, I want to teach the girls the importance of these principles all throughout the year. I have read Protecting the Gift. I was told you may have instructional materials relevant to the public school setting.

I found this book really insightful. As a survivor of a domestic violence situation I was able, in retrospect to identify patterns... particularly with a partner who would not let go and would not accept no. I would comment that a protection order IS useful... because it is a tangible visible sign that you have decided you are WORTH PROTECTING. It doesn't stop someone being killed... but it gives the victim internal permission to start defending themselves. The engage and enrage tactic for a stalking partner is so true.. saying no is not enough, because that requires dialog. Being not available and showing no reaction is so important to disentangling. I wish I had the benefits of this book earlier in my life! Keep going! Cheers, Sue.

Once again I have taken a lot from your writing on the apb.com site about violence...you always get it put down clearly for everyone to read. No, it is not a surprise, yes, there are predictors! If you work with the public for any length of time you will get that? If you are paying attention. That is the first course, and everyone must... Why we have gone into the intuition means nothing attitude, who knows, it is time to turn the tide and listen to sage advice... I have already given away 2 copies each of the gift of fear and protecting the gift...I plan to gift many more... Please keep up your good work and public presence! And, Thank-YOU! :)

I read your editorial on apbnews.com on what the columbine report didn,t tell us and as the matter of fact I found that this report also failed to lead to a reflexion which regarding what recently happened in Florida should start: Whay i found pretty disturbing in this report, in addition to what has already been mention in the media is that it appears that both teenagers who commited those murders and suicide were apparently suffering from serious mental illness; we already knew that one of them, Harris was under medication, and by reading this report what we learn is that the other, Klebold, was writting about suicide since age 15 and became more and more violent in his writtings... So here are the questions I'm wondering about:according to the people who had known him for a long time, Klebold was a quiet, shy, non-violent kid with above-average intlligence. Now, how do you get such a kid being suicidal by age 15 and thinking that killing people is fun? how is it possible in a developped country to have a kid saying that he want to die, that he doesn't like life? What made him think that way? Personally I've so far concluded that either they suffered from mental illness or/and that, as written in your aricle, that they had been very much influenced by the society, the media... In any case this raised other questions like had these kids been caught alive, how would they have been prosecuted? As adults? As people mentally sane? Those are just few questions among the ones i've regarding this tragedy but i think that our society should really start to think about what we are resposible for, how we can produce such kids and such catastrophy... Mr De Becker, your article was very interestig, i just regret that there are not more people pointing out what should lead to a serious questionning of our community and the consistency of the models we propose to our children.

I am a 26 year old Australian woman and have had an interest in criminology for about six years. I have read numerous books on the subject but no other author seems to have the same insight and humanity that you have. I am about to start a degree in Criminology in Australia and hope to work in the field here. Unfortunately I won't have to travel to the U.S. to find a significant number of disturbed individuals to study! I have personally experienced being followed home by a stranger, stalking behaviour from a boyfriend which included threats to my life and violence and I have a close work associate who was recently pursued by a stalker. "The Gift of Fear" was a real inspiration to me and I will never forget some of the lessons it has taught me. I will listen to my intuition always! Keep up the good work. It is people and organisations like you that really do make a difference. From Jane in Au(future special agent!)

_The Gift of Fear_ was reccomended to me when I received a disturbing bit of fan mail while I was a grad student and collegiate journalist. DeBecker's book showed both my instinct that the situation was at least mildly threating and my method of handling the situation were correct. It also reafirmed that my reliance on intuition was a sound self defense strategy. On some level, it saddens me that intuition has been so overshadowed by "cool rational logic" that we are afraid to use our intuition until an expert tells us it is OK to do so. Using my intuition and common sense has save me from situations that would have likely ended in rape.I hope that more women will read this book and realize that you don't have to be a scaredy cat to be safe.

I have just finished writing my thesis on a pathway model of 16 school shooters and am interested in finding out how simular my data is to yours. The Mosaic program both concerns and excites me. It concerns me because I have a great deal of reservation toward the utilization of such a program as it may lead to segration of students who already feel socially isolated. I am also curious as to what percent of a student population will have the traits outlined in Mosiac but not be violent as a program that may lead to a student being essentially 'black listed' should be aware of the number of false positives that its use will generate. Furthermore, I am interested in finding out how easy it would be for a dangerous individual to fool the test and what sort of measure you will use to replace the 'L & K' scales of the MMPI. I highly encourage that Mosaic 200 keep an internal record that will connect the name of an individual to their test results in case an individual takes the test and then becomes a killer. Such survey methods would provide the most accurate correlations to date.

In India there is at present only on company which is realy successfully doing business in PI and security services i.e. GROUP4 OF NETHERLANDS . And the reason for its success is that it has wast experience behind it in this field and there is really no indian company to compete with it. There is plenty of scope for bussiness in PI and security services in India as the market in all areas is constantly growing with lot of foreign compnaies comming in especially in software and IT field as also others.Government of India allows foreign participation in Private security and PI BUT THERE is no powers of police given to it as of now.It can be still a very rewarding business finacially as well as prfessionaly with scope of bussines constantly growing. Dear Mr de Becker: I read both of your books cover to cover in less than 3 days. They are without a doubt the most comprehensive guide to self/child protection ever made. As Deputy Executive Director of Cyberangels the worlds largest online safety organization since 1995, we received hundreds of requests a day for assistance with Cyberstalking. Many of these cases start online and move to offline stalking and we have an entire team working to assist the victim and law enforcement to end it. We also hold safety classes for adults and children on stalking. Your teachings are always in my mind when instructing victims and students, teaching them to listen to that inner voice being number one. I just want to thank you for all you do and for the "Gift" you have given all of us. If you have the time I would love to have one of our "Teenangels" interview you via email for our Cyberkids News. We are an all volunteer organization of almost 4000 members worldwide. Keeping kids safe online is our number one priority. Thank you again Sir, and I look forward to hearing from you or your office.

I read your book the gift of fear after seeing a interview that you did on Oprah. The things that you said in the book have made me reconsider the way I live my life and the things I do unthinkingly. I now realise that many things that I don't consciously think about are there for my own protection and I am becoming more aware of those insincts that I have previously probably ignored. Thank you for writing your book and pointing out things that once spoken about become so obvious but which previously were a mystery! I wouldn't mind a program like W.A.V.E. as long as it would be to prevent physical violence, but programs will in the near future, involve religious beliefs, like I advocate the Bible as Gods TRUTH to mankind, but it will be programs and probably already exist, like W.A.V.E. that will be harbingers to movements against people that exhault Jesus Christ, no I am not phobic to governments, but many people are indeed Christo-phobic, I am homo-phobic and abortion-phobic ...but I smell a rat... As instructors of a progressive, reality-oriented women's self-defense program, we have been appalled by the amount of disinformation that women are forced to sort through when attempting to learn strategies for preventing violence. The methods outlined in "The Gift of Fear" are the "gold standard" against which we measure the scenario solutions presented in our programs. They allow the physical elements of technique to effectively blend with the psychological elements of surviving an attack.

I first learned about Mr. deBecker, like so many others, on the Oprah show. I bought the book "The Gift of Fear" in paperback during my next shopping trip, and I gobbled it up in only a few nights, then read it again. I was so very impressed with the book that I bought one for my daughter, and several more copies to give out to my daughter's friends at their high school graduation. I've since read it again at least twice more. I found the hardback of "Protecting the Gift" in my book club and ordered, sight unseen, three copies, one for me, one for my brother who has two young children and a third for my son and daughter-in-law who were expecting their first. It has now become something of a "joke" that all graduates will receive "The Gift" and all new parents will receive "Protecting" from me. I also want to say that I appreciate Mr. deBecker's honesty in revealing how he has come to be so committed to the safety of others, especially children, and that I admire his courage in working through the violence of his own childhood. This is excellent information you are providing, and I feel certain there have been more than a few lives saved because of what you have written. I also enjoyed your brief stint of writing "Thinking Caps" for USA Today's weekend magazine!

Dear Gavin I am endeavouring to introduce an anti-stalking service within N.Ireland. I was provided with your name by Rachel Chadwick of Yorkshire Television. My backround is from within the police where I was involved in surveillance and close protection. Subsequently after attending university I have been working in the private sector for the last number of years providing the same services. There is nothing like this being provided in NI at present and the police and varioius womens groups are very interested. Obviously i would require further training and advice to enable me to provide a comprehensive and professional service. I would greatly appreciate any advice and guidance you can give me. Kind regards Tim Mercer

I don't normally watch Oprah, but happen to catch a preview of what the subject matter was one day last May. I recorded it (twice actually, since it re-aired in July '99). I am a Child Safety Advocate promoting child safety using the Yello Dyno Child Protection Program developed by expert, Jan Wagner. I became an Independent Distributor for NestFamily.com because I loved their animated Bible and historical videos, but God directed me toward helping keep kids safe. I really appreciate what GdB wrote about Yello Dyno and always take one of my copies of Protecting the Gift with me to the child safety meetings I give. I have been on a local St. Louis Christian radio station promoting actions children can take to protect themselves and mentioned GdB's book, PTG. As a Christian, everytime I read "natures instinct" I would read over it as "God given instincts" or "Holy Spirit discernment." I was wondering if GdB has developed a radio program. I'm currently working on developing what I call "60 seconds of safety" where I've given safety tips from Jan Wagner's book, Raising Safe Kids In An Unsafe World, as well as info from PTG. I only have half a dozen written. With three children under 5 years old, I don't have the time to implement all the ideas I have to help protect the children in my community. I have teamed up with a local benevolance organization, the Community Hope Center, and am putting on a Child Safety Fair this April to bring awareness to National Child Abuse Prevention month. A Dpty. from our county Sherrif's Dept. will be on hand as well. Thanks to the entire GdB organization - I know he's the main brain behind it all, but each and everyone of you are a part of what I feel is hope for a better, less violent future. I pray Gode will remove the blinders from people's eyes, turn from denial and a revival of Integrity will consume this nation and the world and we will stand up for what's right, not what "feels good."

I just finished Protecting the Gift. Excellent Book. It should be given to every parent as gift when thier child is born. I have also read The Gift of Fear. It should be required reading for every high school child every police officer, Personal Director, Teacher, Nurse, or any one else who works with the public. I would hope that in the future Mr. De Becker would write a book for young teenagers. I have seen the need over the years to have a book that would tell them that it was all right for them to tell any one no when it came to their selves. I worked in Mental Health Center and the one thing I found interesting is the young women who came in that thought that they did not have the right to tell any one not to touch them. They would tell me that some one had done something to them they didn't like but they didn't have the right to tell them no because they were there spouse or another family member. One of the greatest gifts my parents gave me was that of telling me I had the right to tell any one no when it came to my body. And that once I did that and they did not listen then it was time to go tell some one else and that anything that happend once no was said became the other persons fault.

I work for the Provincial Corrections Branch and have done so for the past 10 years. Recently, your book The Gift of Fear was listed as required reading for a 'movement/martial arts/defense course that I'm taking(privately run). Since reading it, I have recommended the book to several of my friends and co-workers. I have also made the information in Chapter 9, Occupational Hazards, available to all of my direct Supervisors and the Director of the facility I work in. We have concerns about at least two of my co-workers. The information contained in this chapter 9 is particularly pertinent to our situation. While these co-workers have not, to my knowledge, had police encounters in terms of arrests, they/we are steeped in police culture every working day. I was pleased to learn (yesterday) that my Supervisors/Director have also seen the warning signs and are taking steps to address them. I am certain that the information you provide in the book will help all of us to better be able to recognize when people are at greater risk for acting out at work (as well as our client base! from whom we tacitly expect violence). As well, I have recommended it to the police Sargeants I work with. And again, to one of the Instructors at the Justice Institute where new recruits are trained. My gratitude goes out to you for creating a document that so easily speaks to concerns I have had for awhile but was unable to formulate in my own words. Thank you. Correctional Officer 3 L. Even before we read this excellent book both of us had begun to educate our oldest children (both 6 yrs old now) to be proactive and face personal safety issues without fear. They are learning to "trust their feelings" when something or someone does not seem right. My husband and I own a small business and we have been dealing with some high stakes predictions. Thank you for your help in this matter. This book came along at the right time to help us!!! PLEASE come to Houston sometime!! I gave "The Gift Of Fear" to my teenage niece as the best thing I could ever do to protect her. Because of weight prejudice I was victimized extensively at school, verbally and quite often physically as well. At age 10 an area on my shin went numb for six months because I had been kicked there so many times. Everyone told me to ignore it but that was usually the trigger for violence- "I will not allow you to ignore me." In W. Charisse Goodman's book "The Invisible Woman: Confronting Weight Prejudice in America" she says: "I learned that 'ignoring it', as I was nonchalantly advised to do by my emotionally disengaged parents, usually just made me a greater challenge to bullies, so that I inevitably became 'the one to get'. I learned that adults are often indifferent to the suffering of a fat child, perhaps because they agree with her tormentors, or maybe it's just convenient for them to believe that an abused child will somehow emerge unscathed into adulthood, magically free of emotional scars." That says it all. Teachers and school administrators were almost always uninterested in the abuse I received from other children, physical as well as emotional. As there were no broken bones or internal injuries they simply didn't care. Maybe they thought I deserved it for being fat (sigh), yeah right. Hopefully your books will awaken educators to the fact that ANY kind of abuse is a serious matter. If I were a large child in school today I would probably be shot rather than kicked and punched.

Thank you for your dedication in getting important information about "instinct" to the civilian public. It is unfortunate, however, that the civilian public are quite complacent about the opportunistic threats that they face regularly simply by being unaware and from not paying attention to their blessed "sixth sense". Gift of Fear is a book that everyone like that should read. Having been very interested in nature's intuition I found that it explained the importance of paying attention to those feelings quite well. I am in the business of EP with a background in law enforcement and I respect your work in the field of risk management. God Bless.

I was assigned to read "The Gift of Fear" for a Relationship Violence. I read the book straight through the day I brought it home from the bookstore! My Mother always told me "someone up there is looking out for you" but I always felt that it was something different. Somehow I knew and avoided victimization. Thank you for showing me why and how "I know". I didn't listen to my intuition once because I was to busy and preoccupied with my own plans. I knew that my daughter was going to be in the back of a pick-up and she would be hurt. I told myself it was silly to believe a brief vision in my mind. I lost my Victoria because I did't listen to my fear. I never tell anyone this because they would'nt understand and would try to convince me that I am not to blame. I don't feel guilty but I can't forget that I knew it was going to happen. I will never again ignore the signals I recieve or discount the signals that others recieve. Thank You for making me feel normal! I am urgently working to complete my term papers so that I can take the time to read "Protecting The Gift", I am sure I won't be able to put it down until I have finished it!

I have just finished reading "The Gift of Fear" for the second time,(once was not enough, too much information to digest in one reading). It made me realize how many times that my intuition has "saved my backside). If I may, I would like to recount 2 instances, as well as a exaltation for your book from someone who I trust implicitly. About 7 years ago, I was working for a corporation that yearly the owner of the courier service we used would treat us to a 12 course gourmet Cantonese meal. As most of us had some manners, we would only order a "light" cocktail before dinner, such as a glass of wine, or a beer, however one salesman figured that since someone else was paying the bill, he could order whatever he wanted, he did, "double Chivas", more than once. After the dinner was over, I would usually linger over tea, and chat with my co-workers. But this night, it was like God had slapped me on the back of the head and said "GO HOME NOW!". So I did, and the next day found out that the "Chivas" drinker had taken it upon himself to manually verify the breast size of all the women in the room. The second instance was a few months later, at about 3:00 AM, my husband and I were asleep and our dog "Annie" started acting out of character, she was growling, pacing, and just not being herself. For the first few minutes, we thought she was just ticked off because we kicked her off the bed, but then again, God slapped my on the back of the head and said "Check it out". So of course, I sent my husband to check it out. He went down to the bottom of the stairs, didn't see anything, and came back to bed. When we got up the next morning, one of the windows had been removed, so we called the local RCMP immediately. It turns out that another unit in the townhouse complex had also been burgled, and they had took everything there, where we had lost only perhaps $12.00. Later when the forensic team came to take fingerprints, the Constable who was checking outside, came back in giggling. He said "I'm sorry, I know it's not funny, but this is poetic justice". It turns out that when the thieves left (they had concluded there were more that one), one had slipped in a doggie "land mine" and landed face first in another "doggie land mine". Poetic Justice Indeed! Finally, my nephew, who is in law enforcement, teaches a self defence class for women, when he saw I was reading "Gift of Fear" he gave it his complete rave review, and stated that he suggests it for all of his students. Thank you so much for trying to teach us all, what we already should know!

Just wanted to say I absolutely loved the book and audio book of Gift of Fear. I teach the most effective system of self defense ever devised (WingTsun, pronounced chun) and it is wonderful to address awareness, avoidance, de-escalation and using our intuition because it rounds out our curriculum of total self-protection. Your book is just remarkable and I gave several copies as gifts to several family members and friends! Its my hope to eventually incorporate your common sense approach to predicting and avoiding violence into our physical-based curriculum. WingTsun is a system worth your attention in that is was devised by two chinese women over 300 years ago. It is scientific in principle and empowers smaller and weaker persons to nullify a larger persons attack. WingTsun is most famous as Bruce Lee's foundation art (even though his movies rarely reflected it with acrobatics and bravado) We are a purely self-defense system (not for sport) but embrace an aggressive, even pre-emptive, attitude at protecting ourselves and loved ones. Our U.S. headquarters is in LA and is headed by Emin Boztepe. He is as brilliant at WingTsun and Escrima as you are at your profession and is possibly the most respected martial artist in the world. He is worth looking into. Anyway, love your book and wish you continued good fortune.

As a high school senior, my mom recommended your book The Gift of Fear to me. I have begun taking a Crime and Law class and found how helpful your book has been in contributing to the class as well as in real life situations. I wish more teenage girls would read your book because the warning signs are so helpful. After reading them, I realized that I, too, was in a potentially bad situation and "for some reason" I knew not to go with the young man... intuition. After re-assessing everything that had happend in my relationship with him I now realize that I was a potential rape victim. I also wish schools would adopt your idea of having a class that teaches girls to say no and boys to accept no. Thanks for writing this book- I've recommended it to everyone!

great website--I recently participated in a project to develop a framework for an enhanced resounse to intimate femicide in Ontario wiht Maria Crawford who write Woman Killling: A Study of Intimate Femicide in Ontario--and was eternally frustrated wiht people's inability to focus on what is necesary to address the containment of men--the only thing htey seem willing to focus on is "women's safety planning" which does not usually include addressing the real problem only helping women to avoid it!!! Recently, a major forum here focussed on stalking and criminal harassment after which I thought what a colossal waste of money--they should have paid to bring you folks for a talk...period! It seems folks can't differentiate between domestic violence and potential lethal violence--make all kinds of assumptions and leave gaping holes in a system through which dangerous men fall--not just at -risk women!!! So frustrating--I love your work!! Joanne

I need assistance in fighting a legal issue where a perpetrator has been able to use the system to obtain a warrant for my arrest illegally. I do not have the finances to fight this with an attorney. I've tried to find out the State of Colorado laws, via the internet, but have not been successful. I do not know where to go within the system for help, since I am now viewed as a fugitive due to the rediculous actions of the City/County of Denver. I hope you can lead me to an organization that can help me without charging me my life savings.

A very sincere thank you for writing "The Gift Of Fear".I have for the last three years been interested in how private security professionals can integrate with current national and voluntary agencies dealing with domestic violence and stalking here in the UK. This was brought into frightening perspective in early 1999 when an Aunt of mine was stalked by a former co-worker, whom she had not had contact with for over 35 years. Your book gave me valuable insight in how this person viewed my Aunt. After a three month period of phone calls and letters I was able to predict an escalation and increased threat and provide the law enforcement officers evidence warranting their intervention. No further threat has been recieved since. Many thanks Mike Jackson Security/Chauffeur Do you have any intentions of introducing MOSAIC-20 & MOSAIC-50 into the UK and in what capacity, Governmental or Private. I would appreciate your views.

Reading The Gift of Fear crystallized for me the acculturation of women as victims in American society. The book confirmed both my fettered but natural instincts and my previous "suspicions" on how to handle violent or possible violent situations. Gaven de Becker's "gift" in this book was the empowerment to believe in my own instincts and the ability to not only protect myself from dangerous situations but prevent them from happening in the first place. This was truly life changing information for me.

Read "The Gift of Fear" and enjoyed it tremendously. Although I have never had any personal experience with violence, I am concerned about raising my two sons in society today and providing them with the necessary tools to protect themselves. I look forward to reading "Protecting the Gift".

since reading "Protecting the Gift" I have been spreading the word to everyone I know with children----Read the book, trust your instincts, teach kids HOW to talk to strangers, so they know what it FEELS like. Thanks for the book, the insight, and most importantly- acknowledging the effects on children who witness abuse and violence. Three cheers Janet

I really enjoyed Gavin deBecker's book, "The Gift of Fear." I really think I learned a lot from it, and it was really entertaining, too. I love the way Gavin's sense of humor kind of sneaks up on you while you're reading. I do the "Thinking Caps" puzzles in USA Weekend just about every Sunday. I have started reading "Protecting the Gift". If Mr. deBecker writes another book, I will rush out and buy it and read it and tell other people how great it is.

I have just completed "Gift of Fear" and look forward to reading "Protecting the Gift." Gift is an excellent book for ANYONE and I will recommend it to friends and co-workers. I am a Probation/Parole officer for the state of Florida, every door I knock on is that of a convicted felon, I am interested in any training available that would be appropriate for Probation/Parole Officers. I found your comments on "Protection Orders/Restraining Orders" extremely interesting. I have told more than one victim of domestic violence to consider the possible consequences of the order before going to the judge. I have always told them that a piece of paper cannot keep them safe and that the best they may be able to hope for is that it creates a paper trail for some future prosecution. Thanks for an excellent and informative book. Pam

I've recommended "The Gift of Fear" to my staff since we select the incoming employees ... the reference checking suggestions were excellent. I'll have to look for "Protecting the Gift", now that I know it's available. In the meantime, may I suggest you look into the Human Design System as another tool for "predictability"? www.humandesignsystem.com and its various linkages.

I haven't looked at every page on your website, but I don't immediately see a button which would lead me to speeches by or interviews of or articles about Gavin de Becker. That would be a very helpful addition to the website, IMO. (If they're already here and I just haven't found them yet, I apologize.) I was glad to see in the 12/12/99 NYTimes Magazine the interview in which he states that no human being ever "snaps." Whenever I see this term used in the media, *I* snap!!--which means I write a letter if I can find the quoted person's email address. It is a help to me to have available now that part of his interview to quote in my letter. Please give him my thanks for the education that he has been providing (in addition to his services) to so many people.
