I have seen Mr. de Becker on television and read The Gift of Fear, and it has changed not only the way I act with regards to my personal safety, but also the way that I raise my son. I have especially taken to heart the advice not to teach my son to say hello to strangers, like the woman at the deli or friends of my mother that he does not know. Also, I have passed my copy of The Gift of Fear around to my sisters and my friends. It is nice to know that there is someone out there helping people to keep themselves safe. I hope the next book will be out soon and hope to hear more of what Mr. de Becker has to say.

My 63yr old mother was charged with stalking in utah. the law says it takes two incidents to be charged with stalking.. the police report states my mother did a u-turn and followed this lady to her place of employment..how does she get charged with this when she didn't even know this other person..well it turns out that this lady belongs to a victim advocate office.. she is so scared of her on shadow, some people along with police dept are going way out of control..but you know what really stinks is the law says it takes two or more incidents... how doe this all figure out..

My work continually brings me into contact with people who are in fear of ex-husbands or boyfriends. After reading your book "Gift of Fear" I went out and bought 25 (paperback) copies to give away to people (that expressed fear of harm). I have now given out 23 copies and will now have to make a trip to the bookstore to replenish. One suggestion (to anyone reading this). Any donation (by groups or individuals) of copies of "Gift of Fear" to woman's shelters might save some lives. /s/ Don Mowery

I loved "The Gift of Fear" and recommended it to all my co-workers. Almost all of them in my department (4) read the book on their break, then purchased a copy for a loved one. I am recently divorced from an alcholic who has turned violent and I reread the appropriate section of your book frequently for tips on how to handle him. I'm looking forward to your next book. When I was getting watch batteries and my wedding rings were getting cleaned,I got a sick feeling and kept looking down toward the jewelers,I thought of The Gift of Fear. I HAD to get back there, when I did my rings had been given away to another customer. Upon reflection, I think the salesgirl kept them. It still makes me ill to think of it. The jeweler eventually gave me new rings, but it will never be the same. I keep your book by my bed and re-read it to reinforce the thoughts and ideas. I don't ignore FUNNY feelings anymore. Thank you for writing. Merry Christmas

Dear Mr. DeBecker: I read your book when it first came out and think that every woman should read this book. I really think that my nieces should each have a copy and have decided to give each a copy of your book for Christmas. They will be going to college next fall and I feel this is really a learning experience they should have. I think that you should know that your work is appreciated and will in my opinion save lives. Thank you!

I have been stalked by my husband's ex for over two years. She has been arrested, but charges were dropped due to lack of service, she avoided the police for two months while they were trying to serve her with my protection order. I don't know what I should do. My protection order expires on Dec. 31st, and I am terrified of what she will do then. The last time I extended my order, the judge told me to quit wasting the court's time, grow up and get over it (exact words). The legal system seems to ignore my problem. If there is any information available for me to assist me, please E-mail me at btgsmg@bigplanet.com. Thank you so much for your wonderful website!!!

Since reading "The Gift of Fear" I have been more proud of the fact that I do trust my own instincts. The book validated a lot of the decisions I have made in my life. I don't consider myself a "bitch" to strangers who make me feel awkward anymore. I worked in a scummy bar for two years, and I felt bad about the way I turned some of the wierdos down because I thought I'd been too harsh on them, after reading this book, I felt much better about my decisions, and am less hesitant to express my feelings in those situations. I feel I'm a lot safer after reading this book, and I've dated a lot less odd guys because I listened to me instead of thinking I was just being too picky. Thank you, Michelle

Thank you for your book, GIFT OF FEAR. I have already referred one woman to the book and am delighted to have your web address for referral purposes, as well. I write romance fiction and am concerned at reading how writers depict their heroines simply telling a stalker/boyfriend to get lost--after he's spent months to find her and followed her accross the country--and he does! Since romance fiction models constructive behavior in so many other ways, it worries me to see incorrect information given out. I hope to be accurate, and learn more, in order to provide truly helpful information to readers. So "thank you two times." Sally Franzmann

Mr. De Becker, I had a very bad experience with a new male roommate earlier this year. Before we lived together he came across as a sweet and gentle person. He is from a wealthy family, although he chooses to live more like a hippie. I thought he was just idealistic and passionate. After we moved in together, he started to become controlling and started to put down women verbally. I am an independant women that works very hard to achieve my goals. He was very threatened of that. He finally threatened me with physical violence and did small things to harm my computer equipment. I quickly got out of there!! (The awful thing is that his parents know of this behavior and enable him in his difunction. He has since done this to 3 other women this year!!) After reading your book, I realized that there had been clues to his dark side. I just was not trained in how to read them!! I moved from a small town in the south to Seattle and had never encountered this before. Another sad thing is that a lot of people around me actted as if I sould have known better and where not understanding. Mainly other men!! This whole issue is very unsettling. Anyway, Thank you so much for the book. It has been so helpful and a real eye opener. I also would recommend that women read books on how to read body language and how to tell if someone is telling you the truth or lying. You're a hero in my book!!

I just have a question that i desperately need answered. I don't know if what is happening to me is stalking or not. I am a 21 year old woman. I dated a 26 year old male for about 3 months. I broke up with him because i found that he was possessive and annoying. I broke up nicely but he could not seem to handle it. He has sent numerous flowers to my home and work, letters, cards, gifts, food, etc. He has shown up in the parking lot of my office building at 8:30 am, shown up at my house, called my house blocking his number, or from payphones. I have asked him politely to leave me alone and on another occasion I felt i had to become rude because it was not working. I ordered him to terminate all contact with me and to stop sending things to me and not to show up at my work or house. This did not work and it still continues. He has been to my house several times while i am at work and has even snooped inside my car for unknown reasons. I don't know if i should go to the police. I am afraid he is getting desperate and may violently come after me. He stills believes i will go back to him. I never will. When he realizes this, i may need help. What do you think???? Please respond.

I've been involved in my countie's first felony stalking case since they passed their stalking law 2 years ago. The stalker is an ex-boyfriend, and has been in jail since April. Things HAVE slowed down considerably, but I realize that he will be released one day. I've decided to move out of the condo I've lived in for 10 yrs. and quit the Mgmt job I've had for the last 3 years. For the 1st time in my life I'll be moving to another state and away from all of my family & friends. Could you provide some advise on precautions I should take? (i.e., forwarding my mail, changing my name, etc.) I'm looking for any advise I can find. You may send replies to me at my email address at: dwatkins@responsenetworks.com until 10/30. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. Donna Watkins

Ever since seeing Mr. Gavin deBecker on T.V.discussing his book, The Gift of Fear I have been intrigued with everything Mr. deBecker deals with and writes about. I purchased The Gift of Fear, and it is one of my favorite books. I have always prized my intuition and have used it in a number of cases. At the age of 24, after getting married and having a child, I am finally going back to college. I will have a double major in criminal justice and psychology. Maybe someday after receiving my degrees, I will search out your corporation again. Who knows? Maybe I will one day work for you. Thanks for your knowledge - it is fascinating! You have inspired me to help others in the way you are helping them. Thank you.

Just did a training telconference on Domestic Violence by Police Officers here at the FBI Academy. All the experts were talking about Gavin deBecker. We were sent a video tape of Mr. de Becker's presentation to an annual stalking conference and I was very impressed with Mr. de Becker's speaking style - simple, efective, hard-hitting, sincere, and ringing of truth and caring. A lot of important and potentially complicated information relayed in a way that allowed everyone to not only understand but really hear what Mr. de Becker had to say. What a powerful speaker! And to what great use he is putting his talent. I just finished reading "The Gift of Fear." I will be reading more of Mr. de Becker's suggested resources. I am producing several more teleconferences here on the subjects of Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, Workplace Violence, and Stallking. I will be contacting your offices for more information. Keep up the great work!

If you do, I would like to know what the qualifications are and what kind of training I would have to attend and pass. I am very impressed with your company!

I have read Mr. DeBecker's book "The Gift of Fear" and I was and still am energized by the topic of fear, personal safety, and the current mindset towards crime and victimization. I have used my instincts and gut reactions and I have never been one to buy into the commercialized fear industry. I am a graduate student in Criminal Justice Studies and I was wondering if you, or anyone else might have more information about these issues. Specifically, how can I learn more about this and how I could do further studies about them. What kinds of opportunities are available in teaching, careers or employment? In February I bought the book "The Gift of Fear" but did not read it until last month. This month I began an email correspondence with a person who (I thought) had many endearing qualities, but something was bothering me about him. Finally, I told him I did not want to correspond nor continue to email. His response was violent and threatening and though he has my personal contact information I am not worried about a personal attack as he lives in another country (but does travel to the US on business). I'm glad I listened to my instincts - I shudder to think what his reaction would have been had we met and I had tried to back out then. Thank you for the good advice in the book.

Congratulations on an excellent book "The Gift of Fear". It's one of those rare books which should be compulsory reading for everybody. It's also the only book I've read cover-to-cover twice in one week. Following my own abusive experience I have set up a web site devoted to tackling awareness of bullying, the common denominator behind all violent behaviour, be it physical or psychological. The home page is at http://www.successunlimited.co.uk and the page on the serial bully at http://www.successunlimited.co.uk/serial.htm contains a detailed profile of the serial bully which is common both to psychologically and physically violent individuals. The page at http://www.successunlimited.co.uk/PTSD/ defines the psychiatric injury caused by bullying and harassment. Keep up the good work!

My boyfriend bought me the book the gift of fear and I am reading it every chance I can. To make a long story short, he has a woman who is leaving lipstick messages on his car, window of his house, drawing pictures and putting food on the cars (like sour cream and eggs), has left him written messages on paper with tape recordings of songs in the past and making phone calls from payphones and hanging up. She has also involved a couple of his friends in her phone calls and now my mom. Records and pictures of the phone calls and messages she has left are being kept, but the law protects the criminal. Anyway, the book has provided me with many, many insights and I am now paying much more attention to my feelings/intuition. Hopefully something will happen with the law soon that she is stopped once and for all Thank you. (Sorry for the long story)

I recently re-read "The Gift of Fear" and had the same experience as the first time I read it - having to check the door locks and closets before I could turn off the lights to go to bed. I know that really wasn't Gavin De Becker's intent, since he was very clear in the book about genuine fear signals for real dangers as opposed to just general worry. But the force of the case histories especially impressed me, just the thought of people so sick and obsessed that they could write literally thousands of letters to a TV actor to threaten death or convince them they were marrying the wrong person. I finished that book not only a little wiser on how to avoid and recognze dangerous people, but with a greater realization of the wide variety of disturbed people "out there". Like so many other guys who read this book, I'll be loaning my copy to my sisters, my mother, and any other woman I come to care about in my life. On a side note, I hope Mr. De Becker's lecture circuit will include Orlando one of these days.

I want to help my building management to cope with the alwalys possible threat of violent behavior. We do a very good job of screening the building which is a multiple use office building. We can screen for most types of negetive intrusions. However, where a possible violent event could take place, the building management is not educated to the complexities of the relm. I have been exposed to the ideal that nothing has ever happened in my workplace, and that we must be doing a pretty good job. I have also been repramanded for sujesting that we employ a tactic recommended in "The Gift Of Fear" when a building employee was about to be firered. Could you possibly offer a suggestion about how I might handle this? gomek@ten.net

It turns out that the Enterprise Libray here in Las Vegas had a copy of your book The Gift of Fear. I spent the day reading it. This is one of the most informative books I've read in a long time. Although I haven't been particularly concerned with crime lately, personally, the benefit I derived from reading this book are the profiles of the different personality types, attitudes, backgrounds, and situations for crimes to occur. I recognize situations and people that match up with the book. I don't know about the police typically in America, but in Las Vegas, they're geared toward response once a crime has been committed, rather than prevention. This book helps those who take some measure of responsibility for their own safety and well being as well as others around them by given them an idea about what to keep an eye out for. Thank you very much for this informative work, Sincerely, Mark Kostner, Las Vegas

Dear Mr. DeBecker: Back in 1995, when I was staying in Santa Cruz, CA., I happened across an interesting fellow named Jeff Turner, who shared with me his tales of stalk- ing the pop star Tiffany back in 1988. He showed me his scrapbook on the matter, and then proceeeded to rant and rave about someone named Gavin DeBecker. I tried to see if there was really such a person, or if this was another of his wild stories about Nazis, cults, UFO's, and Tiffany being Jesus's stand in for the Second Coming, but found nothing about you in the pre-internet era. Since then I moved to Las Vegas and lost touch with Jeff, and I read a review of your book, the Gift of Fear. You really do exist! I intend to buy a copy at my first opportunity. Meantime I have been surfing your webpage and have been impressed with what I saw. I found your use of technology, databases, and the web, very interesting. I know one thing, Jeff certainly was a believer in your methodology, years after the incident and Tiffany had faded to relative obscurity, in the real world at least. I was wondering if you had any comment about Jeff and the Tiffany case you could share. He is the only bonafide stalker I've ever had the priviledge to have known. What's interesting in retrospect is this person strikes you as being straight as an arrow till you get to know him and he shares all these wild ideas of his, then he falls into the dark profile of people you read about in the paper. Anyway, I'm anxious to read your book. Sincerely, MARK KOSTNER Las Vegas Sincerely, MARK KOSTNER Las Vegas, NV

I am very happy to have found your wonderful website. I think "The Gift of Fear" is one of the most important, informative, well-written books available to the public, and I have given many as gifts and will continue to do so. In addition, a short time after reading the book, I was able to avert a potential stalking situation soon after it began, due to having been educated on various cues to be aware of, and strengthening my own intuitive convictions. I am very grateful for the crucial safety benefits this book offers.

I've just finished reading The Gift of Fear, and it has changed my life. Mr. De Becker teaches the reader what they really, already know about their survival instincts but gives the skills and information necessary to be in tuned to them. As a social worker I am all to familiar with the effects of domestic violence and stalking behavior on families, and entire communities. Also as a woman, I now feel empowered and confident in my ability to protect myself and others. Thank you Mr. De Becker for teaching me to hear my inner voice, and giving me strategies to ensure my own safety.

I recently took the emPOWER (formerly Model Mugging) course here in Vancouver and your book "Gift of Fear" was recommended reading. Thank you for writing it - I only wish I would have known this information before but "better late than never. I am the survivor of an assault last month during a terrifying 6-day road trip with my boyfriend (now ex-). Since then I have received over 70 harrassment calls. I reported the assault to the police just to keep on record so that if anything happened to me they would know who did it. Since that time the police have interviewed me and warned him not to contact me. Well, after 2 days free from phone calls, I got another one last night before he left the airport for Europe. He now believes I have betrayed him by going to the police and he has threatened me on many occasions that if I betrayed him, he would kill me. I believe now that by involving the police, the situation has escalated. I am feeling frustrated by the legal system and am confused about how to proceed at this point. The police will review the file and decide if they have enough evidence to arrest him upon his return next week. I feel that arresting him will not end it but make him more angry. I know it is not over yet and that he will contact me again. I feel that I should just do nothing and hope the harrassment will eventually stop but it may be too late for that with this recent escalation. If he is not prosecuted, it shows him that there are no consequences for his actions. It truly is a Catch-22. If the situation escalates to an attack, I know now that I will fight back and survive and I owe this to myself and emPOWER (formerly Model Mugging). After a 3-day Intensive emPower course, I have the gained back my self-confidence, self-esteem, and have the skills and knowledge, courage and committment to my safety to fight back if attacked. Also the strength I gained from emPower has given me tremendous healing from the assault and the courage to move forward in my life. I strongly encourage every woman to take control of her life and empower herself. Check the web for Model Mugging/Impact Locations near you. When you walk out your door knowing that you can defend yourself, everything become different. DO IT NOW- don't wait - BE SAFE!

I first learned of Gavin De Becker when he appeared on La rry King Live. I liked what I heard and bought the book. I read it over 2 months ago and have thought about it every day since. Having raced cars for some 10 years, I thought I knew all about fear but this book was a real eye opener. It made me recognise that some fears are not always concious and yet our behaviour is determined by them! Like I said, a real eye opener. Great work that should be read by every one.

I just finished reading the book "The Gift of Fear" and it gave me some perspective on events that occurred in my life. I do not look at myself as a victim despite the fact I have been stalked and raped twice and had an abusive relationship with a live-in lover. I had assumed that these things just happen if you go through life with an open attitude and I was determined not to let those who hurt me have the power of closing my attitude towards life. Yet, one thing I could not seem to shake was a nagging sense of guilt, as if I had brought this down on myself somehow. After all, it was not an isolated incident and there must have been something that attracted these unbalanced men to me. I see now that the guilt came from my refusal to listen to those things that tipped off the danger of these individuals. At the very least I waited too late to get out of situations where there were plenty of signals that something was wrong. I am currently involved in a loving relationship and I have three children of my own, one of whom is a daughter and I am determined to teach her not to be nice to any and all simply because she is a female. That is the equivalent of saying "It is better to be hurt by a male than be thought unfeminine by the male who seeks to hurt you." All told I would rather she hollered in a well-meaning stranger's face than end up naked in an alley surrounded by yellow tape. As for me, I learned the hard way that the road to peace of mind is being armed with myself. I still will not let anyone take away my openness to the world; but, true openness is realizing the guy across from me is not who I want him to be; but, who he is. Thank you for helping me understand the forces within myself that have led me from the emergency room to the classroom to freedom.

Dear Mr. DeBecker: I read your book in just two days -- I found it to read just like a really good suspenseful crime novel -- so I appreciate how well the book was written. More important than that of course, I was really happy to see in writing what I have, for several years, firmly believed and adamantly defended about intuition. I have known that I was perceiving things that I could not concsiously comprehend at the time that I was perceiving them. Also, I found the points you made about anxiety and worry to be extremely insightful. Thank you for sharing what you think and know.

I taught school for 15 years and decided 4 years ago that I needed a new direction in my life. I researched and trained for over a year and began to conduct seminars and classes 2 years ago. I connected with Kerry Kolmar 6 months ago via email and will be travelling to Atlanta in late August to take Phase II of his self defense course. The info he has shared with me and the Gift of Fear have helped tremendously in teaching my classes. I recommend the book to all my students. As many others who have written to you, I am very interested in expanding my knowledge in this area. I am planning to return to college for a masters in behavioral science so that I can move further into this field. I welcome communications from people in the Richmond area who are interested in this subject also. Thanks Mr. deBecker for an informative and valuable book.

I surely wish I could have read "Gift of Fear," 10 to 20 years ago! Little girls are still taught to be nice, make nice and disreguard their own fears (intuitions) because females are normally portrayed as irrational and over-emotional. You are doing womankind a remarkable service. I am now disabled due to violence in the workplace. I used to work as an Corrections Officer at a MI State prison. I used to tell my friends that it was tough going into such a hostile work place. You'd have people screaming in your face, calling you vile things, throwing things at you...and then you had to deal with the prisoners. I was attacked by two co-workers, plus there were three attempts on my life, while on the job. Females in the workforce need to understand that it is very neccessary to be rude, assertive and even aggressive at times. Believe in yourselves, believe in your feelings, trust your own instincts, but be careful of who you trust, then teach your children to do the same. Because the bottom line will always be that no one else can or will protect you. After-the-fact, no one will be held accountable for what has happened to you but YOU!!! TO Mr. de Becker, you and only you, are helping to restore my faith in mankind...I am truely impressed and I haven't been impressed in a very...long...time!! Respectfully, Sherry@

After reading THE GIFT OF FEAR I made everyone in my office read it, and it has become our latest favorite book. One woman I work with is being sent to Quanico (sp?), and all she said was, "Gee, maybe I'll get to meet Gavin De Becker". We've come up with different workshops based on THE GIFT OF FEAR, I can't thank you enough for the work you do, and God, I know I'm not a problem, but all I can think about is if you're going to find any PINS in my letter. Sincerely, Tammy

There is no substitute for interviewing a suspect in person. Use of a matrix, any matrix is a poor substitute for real police work. I'm as amazed at how anyone could not use former police/agents for any investigative purpose. Only in Hollywood!

Just finished your book and found it very informative. It seems to be a bit confusing though as to intervention methods and what the outcome should be with regards to how the police handle stalking situations. You seem to advocate calling law enforcement to handle crime but then seem to advocate a don't worry approach because most stalkers are harmless. But stalking is a crime and thier actions although not against the law by them selves do have a life changing effect on the victim. I can't imagine getting a stalking call and telling the victim that she is not really in fear or that she is just worried. I know that is simplistic and not what you are suggesting in whole but I think that a call to my supervisor would be made right after advising a client not to worry.

At times I feel I have become wiser about protecting myself from the stalker and then make absurd mistakes, for instance, using my real name and e-mail address as I make comments in this guestbook. After this act, I was reading other comments and find a very obscure entry from an adjacent community. It is a small town atmosphere where I come from, and now I have made a public statement of my fear and vulnerability. Cool huh? Live and learn. Maybe this one time luck will be on my side and this one will not engage and enrage.... I guess it is only foolishness if I repeat the mistakes over and over.

I just finished reading 'The Gift of Fear' in paperback. It was an excellent read. The advice that sticks with me is ...... if you are forever in fear of something you numb yourself to a signal of real fear and cannot heed that intuitive warning system we all have. We have a serious stalker with three documented attempts on my life. I have a valid restraining order which the police refuse to enforce because I am a male -- not a female. Even internal affairs laughed at me when I presented my well-documented case to them. My wife just got your book today and is reading it (I will do so when she is finished) to see what ideas we should incorporate into our lives. Oh yeah, when SWAT attempted to serve the stalker with the TRO, SWAT came back to us and stated the stalker's house was booby trapped, they would not "go in," and we were on our own until the stalker successfully injured us. So much for our wonderful police department. Signed... Frustrated in Hawaii.

Your book is wonderful. I'm interested to know though, how one actively assists in the prosecution of a stalker or other annoyance, without engaging. And what does one do when the probation officer of an individual against whom you have a domestic restraining order, who has violated that order three times, threatened to burn down your house, has had over 30 guns siezed from him, and who is currently on probation for two years in lieu of a one year jail sentence, looks you straight in the face and says she does not believe he is a threat!! Maybe tell her to read your book!! Thanks

I've read the book, and recently I took a college course in Crisis Intervention. These two things dovetailed nicely, but I was surprised to learn that the intsructor of the course, a very experienced and capable psychologist, had never heard of the book. I recommmended it to him. I feel more empowered to help my family and friends informally assess domestic violence situations and possible escalation. I now have something more to back me up than just "gut instinct". Although this is the very thing that counts most of all!

It's nice having the knowledge there, kind of like an internal self-defense course. Read Mr de beckers book, The Gift of Fear. Found it very interesting. Since reading it regretfully, the small town where I live near Hull lost the life of a 22 year old local girl to a garage worker who for some unknown reason lured her then killed her with a hammer. 5 weeks of a police investigation eventualy tracked him but not until he returned to the body after 4 weeks to re-locate it.I have little doubt that if the girl had knowledge of your book and it's contents she would be alive today. I am intrigued by the criminal mind and it's activity. If you would like to know more, can send more details.Additionally, it is obvious that nothing like this exists in the U.K. although the problem here is not yet as bad as the U.S. it is certainly moving in the same direction. Please forward any info packs available, assistance U.K. side available if your organisation ever needs. Well done.

If you would like to know more, can send more details.

Thank you for "The Gift of Fear". Probably one of the most important and informative books I've read in over 20 years of working in law en- forcement, particularly as our de- partments Domestic Violence Specialist, and our police depart- ment being involved in a "landmark" Stalking case here in Massachusetts. I've passed on my copy of "The Gift of Fear" to our department detective to read! I also recommend your book to my students in the courses that I teach at Becker College (no joke, that is really the name of the college). I will be in touch with you regarding the MOSAIC 20 Program for use as part of our efforts against domestic violence/stalking (will send a letter on Dept. letterhead). Kevin C. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed "Gift of Fear." The initial subject (violence and fears) did not arouse my curiosity and I thought it would be a quick read. However, I was impressed by the general insights into human nature, such as the ways we may be manipulated and may instantly feel uncomfortable without quite knowing why. The book has convinced me to honor these feelings, and try to figure out why, instead of discounting them entirely. I was disappointed, however, that there were no more details on the author's childhood. The episodes recounted were riveting, perhaps in a follow-up?

I've been inspired by your book and comments during an interview on NPR's "To The Best of Our Knowledge", to develop and include the key elements of your work into my 'other' job: teaching self-defense, particularly to children and women. I'm an instructor at the ATA Family Taekwondo Center in Madison, WI, and through my work with the public schools and our dojang, have come to the conclusion that what we've been teaching has had far too much emphasis placed on the physical elements of self defense. To my mind, this should be the very last resource to be used in the case of a dangerous encounter. We do teach awareness, posturing, preventive, and basic self defense techniques--but really don't recognize, or capitalize on, the gift of fear. This may largely be due to the chronic sense of fear that people (women in particular) live with--one that as the book correctly observes numbs us to the recognition of the real threats be making us hyperaware of all threats, imagined, real-but not dangerous, and real-and life-threatening. I want to take what I've learned and distill it to it's essential elements so that I may effectively convey it concisely and succinctly to a kindergarten satety class, a 5th grade coed gym class, or the night-shift medical staff at the University & local hospital. I would appreciate any comment, direction, or instruction your organization could offer to assist me in this endeavor. My family has benefitted from your work, and we want to share it's wisdom with everyone we know. I am in a particularly advantageous position to 'spread the word' through my contacts in the schools and community. Please contact me via email or at 608 / 256-4755 if you have any questions, and my curricul mitae is available upon request. Thanks you for you time and attention. Mitch

I recently read The Gift of Fear and thought it was very informative and interesting. I find that I am a very paranoid person and I wish I could not be, but in today's times, I don't see how that it is possible. After reading your book I am going to try and not worry about every little thing, person or place that may look scary or unreliable. I do beleive very much in intuition and feel that I have a special gift when it comes to picking up signs, feelings or even when I first meet someone I can usually predict their personality, or whether or not they are a good person. I just got out of an abusive relationship that lasted four years, and your book has helped me a lot with knowing what to look for when in a relationship, and now I do see the signs that were there in the beginning, I just chose to ignore them. I knew for a long time that he was not going to change, but I chose to stay to finish school and because I loved my job. Eventually I got tired of being hit on and bossed around, so I chose to leave. It was the best decision I have ever made. I am only 25, and feel that the last four years were wasted, but I know what to look for and hope that I won't fall prey to that kind of person again. Your book will help me a lot and I intend to read it every once and awhile to remind myself and to keep myself alert. Thanks so much for writing this book, I plan to let everyone in my family read it and make sure they understand.

The core of the book was extremely informative, but on a more personal level, I was enlightened by your views of the news, violent television programs, worry vs. fear, and the proven fact that celebrity stalkers are plentiful. As a woman, martial arts instructor, and self defense instructor - I thank you.

I LOVED "Gift of Fear." As a woman working towards a degree in psychology and looking for an area in which to practice, this has really caught my attention. I'd previously been thinking about forensic/criminal psychology more from the perspective of law enforcement, but this field of safety seems like it would affect, and improve the lives of, a great many more people. I'd like to be kept informed of any events in the SF Bay Area, whether presentations, conferences or others, that I might be able to attend.

California stalking victims should be apprised of new legislation. Senate Bill 489 (Alpert, San Diego) would give victims of domestic violence a confidential mailing address through the Secretary of State's office to use for registering their kids in school, car, DMV, voting etc. It currently needs to be amended to protect California's stalking victims who DID NOT have domestic relationships with their stalkers. We who are victims of stranger stalkers need and deserve the same protections under this pending legislation. The program is modeled after Washington state's successful Address Confidentiality Program. The cost is less than $200 per participant for the taxpayers. Alot less than the cost of crime. For further information, please look up Alpert and state government for California. My story was used on the cover of the Sunday, March 1, 1998, San Jose Mercury News (a very large Silcon Valley newspaper) in Northern California. The article can be obtained from www.mercurycenter.com All stalking victims should be apprised of this groundbreaking protective legislation, that doesn't wait for crime to occur.

I first saw Mr. de Becker on Oprah and just yesterday listened to the audio version of his book. My intent was to evaluate a current relationship that has become troubling to me in terms of deceit and manipulation. This was first evidenced by me on Friday and when it became apparent, I immediately thought back to seeing Mr. de Becker on television and his message and his book. This person and I are not in the same state and have agreed to have no communication for one week. As several warning signals were present, I plan to end this relationship. Thank you Mr. de Becker.

Recently, in our small area one of our teenagers was murdered. Beaten to death. The case is at this time unsolved so everyone is pretty scared. I have read the Gift of Fear and even bought to book for my son's wives. I wish everyone around here would read it. I have made some contacts through our Police Dept and have set up a community night with a Self Defence Expert to give our concerned citizens some safety advice. It is the first of such programs and I am hoping there will be more. I guess any informaton that I can get to give out would be appreciated, or advice on programs that will make all of more aware of what to do in a crime situtation would be helpful. Thank you.

Dear Mr. De Becker: your book, The Gift of Fear, was a most interesting read. I quite understand the emotion you described--the seemingly-irrational fear that I have always referred to as the "uh-oh" feeling. Read your article Listen to Your fear... published in Reader's Digest Sept. 1997 issue. The best article I've read in years in stead of describing the painful ordeal the awareness and prevention techniques, I wish parents, teachers, elders, society besides all those does and don'ts had taught us to trust our very own 'instinct'. Looking forward to reading more articles. At last a prayer for all children, adolescents, adults to live every day of their life free of pain, guilt, shame...

I am a rape/assault survivor. I have just recently finished reading "The Gift of Fear" and I must thank you. I can never get back what I lost in my incident, but the knowledge and insight I have gained both from the experience itself and now from reading your book will be with me always. I actually am an employee of the law enforcement agency who was called to investigate the incident, which only compounded the humiliation and embarrassment I felt in addition to the physcial and emotional pain of the attack. The Crime Prevention Officer at this agency recommended your book to me. I have now bought a copy for each of the women in my life, including my thirteen year old daughter. It is my opinion that the information you provide is absolutely vital to women of all ages, as well as the men who love them (my husband has also read the book, and it was a great help to him as well). I just wanted to thank you. I have a greater sense now of my own power through intuition, and that in itself is priceless. Again, I thank you. Alethea Licata-Hearin

Mr De Becker, I am currently reading your book, and just wanted to say how much I am enjoying it and how much I've already learnt. Although Australia is a much less violent society generally that the US, we only have total population of 17 mill. we still have our share of crazy people, and our jails are full of many people who have committed acts of violence. The points you make are very clear and concise. I have also fallen into the trap (whilst watching the news) of thinking, 'how could he be a killer, he looks like my accountant!" If you are ever coming 'Down Under' I'd be happy to help you build up your profile here in Australia. (I am a corporate trainer/consultant & author). If I can help you, please let me know. Thank you once again for writing the Gift of Fear.IT's a gift few of us know we already have. Kind regards, Peter Schmideg

I bought THE GIFT OF FEAR last year and it's truly the best non-fiction book I've read in ages. I recommend it to everyone I meet. I work on a college campus (College of St. Benedict - a women's school), where we have recently had 3 stranger rapes. In the flurry of concern following the announcement of the attacks, demand for self-defense training has skyrocketed. We are sending a number of employees to RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) training this summer. I was wondering if your company would ever consider training and "certifying" instructors to carry on your message of self-protection. We believe strongly that what you have to say in this book could benefit everyone. Please consider this request and let me know if this becomes a possibility. I will sign up! Peace, Jennifer

In one of the books acknowledgments Mr. De Becker mentioned William Zimmerman of the U.S. Capital Police. The investigation did not provide me with the opportunity to use the MOSAIC developed, however, I am interested in obtaining information about MOSAIC-5 and its current uses within the campus law enforcement profession.

I read your book "The Gift of Fear" and have been gathering the courage to contact you. I come from a horrible child-hood background and am aware of the shame, humiliation, and labelling that society inflicts on persons who do not fit the norms. Being a "baby boomer", I was always ashamed to tell of my up-bringing as it didn't fit the "Leave It to Beaver" image. As it lived in a rural setting and as my father who was a serious perpetrator of domestic violence and child abuse was a full bird Colonel, no one much cared of what insights and coping skills that I had acquired. Nor, did they ever want to hear the truth. Thank you for your courage to tell the truth. I hope that I had do so, too. Without the truth out there, nothing can be changed.

I myself am currently employed in law enforcement and when I worked in investigations, training in this area could have been very useful in dealing, not only in threat cases but also in the reasons in homicides. Just finished your book and am interested in what is being or can be done in my area to educate the public, further. I presently work with employers, low-income and "downsized" workers, and have a strong professional interest in finding out more about hiring and firing safely, and how to advise employers to do the same. Personally, I have a strong interest in the law and domestic violence prevention, and would be very interested in becoming a representative of your program in my area. Please contact me with any suggestions. Thank you.

Gavin, I listened to your audio tape. Excellent take on human behavior and interaction. What you call the "dignity domino" I have referred to for years as the "dignity card." I have had success with people in crisis when I have guaranteed their safety and their dignity. When they ask me, what have you done for me, I reply, I will guarantee your safety and preserve your dignity. You're on target on that issue. My article targeting CEO's for workplace violence awareness discusses that issue with a strong emphasis on the dignity card. Regarding a person's unwillingness to take "no", I comment that such a thing has a positive side. As a hostage negotiator, I have spent hours going around the issue of no and have had relatively good success. This was, however, not in a "stalking" context. We both read off the same sheet of music. You'd make a super hostage negotiator with your insight. You're right about another issue, many cops do not have such insight. I just completed over 100 hours of training of cops to be first responders to hostage or barricaded subject situations. With due respect, Larry J. Chavez, Sergeant Sacramento Police Department Senior Hostage Negotiator

As a Ph.D. candidate and Clinic Supervisor for the University of Oklahoma Counseling Psychology Clinic, I constantly strive to discover ways to help our clients with their problems. I have read your book, Mr. de Becker, and am extremely pleased with having discovered information that can be of use to our clients in domestic violence counseling. Additionally, I specifically read your book with the prevention of suicide in mind, as this is something that comes up at the clinic almost on a daily basis. Historically, psychologists have been very bad at predicting suicide. Improving our predictive ability is of utmost importance. I believe that using JACA will be of great benifit in this effort. If you have any further comments or suggested readings on the topic of suicide prediction/prevention, I would be most appreciative. Thank you.

Just finished "The Gift Of Fear" great book! Thanks for letting me know I'm not imagining it when I pay attention to that "little voice" that at times has really roared inside my head. I know now that I saved myself from danger when I delayed entering my Appt for a few minutes the night I was merely burglarized instead of robbed, raped or killed. The two men in the lobby of my building gave me the CREEPS the second I saw them , through the glass while I was still in my car!. I knew they did not belong there. It is really amazing how quickly my involuntary reactions kicked in, the adreneline was flowing and all of my senses felt razor sharp. I'm glad I listened then, and I'm grateful to you for writing the book. As I work extremely strange and unpredictable hours which often having me leave hospitals in the wee hours and walking to unsecure parking lots usually very tired , it is good to know that my own gift of fear can help me to arrive safely. Thanks again for a truely meaningful and helpful book, Patricia Barker

I passed your book on to my oldest daughter who is in college, but only wish that you had a book available for my 10 year old to read. Do you plan to write any books for children? I understand that children do not have the gift of fear, but at what age do they start to have intuition? Would it be possible to teach children in a way that it wouldn't scare them? I would also like to see children's books that educate them about strangers. If you can help please let me know. Thanks again for helping me listen to my intuition.

The "Gift of Fear" was reviewed in the LA Times last summer, I purchased it in preparation for my new career in real estate after being laid off by a large corporation that was downsizing. I had a hunch this could be a potentially dangerous line of work in dealing with the general public, still didn't imagine that a fellow agent would be the initial source of problems. He's one who claims to be an ex-Navy Seal (from a country in Europe, not USA) and an ex-employee with a local law enforcement agency. He insists on "helping" new agents even though they don't ask for his help, invades their personal space, grabs their computer printouts, grills them about transactions that he's not even involved in, etc. He's not an owner/broker, he's not a manager, he's not an employer, he's not a sales trainer, he's not a partner, he's not a cooperating agent, he has no special authority. He's just a nosy, obnoxious, demanding co-worker. Then he gets "offended" when his "help" is clearly not welcomed. He "threatens" to stop helping out (we wish!) He accused me of accusing him of trying to steal my clients because I grabbed my computer printouts back from him (the ink was still wet, he was about to ruin my photos), then he gave me a vehement lecture about how "honest" he is and how he would never steal other's clients (I wasn't questioning his honesty, I just wanted him to stop invading my personal workspace and leave my stuff alone). And potential buyers can't be determined or stolen from seller's multiple listing forms anyway! He was giving me Unnecessary Details... When this alarming behavior is complained about to the broker/manager behind closed doors, he somehow finds out and threatens the new agents, telling them he knows they've been "telling stories" about him, he's been f----d by them, he'll f--- them back and that he "can do it too because" he "used to be a police officer"... Sound like a candidate for workplace violence? I think so.

I recently purchased The Gift of Fear after watching your interview on Oprah. I am so impressed with the book that I have been recommending it to all my friends and family. There are so many situations in the book which strike notes of familiarity. I find myself paying closer attention and being more proactive in situations in which I had previously been "polite". In discussing excerpts from the book with some friends I have been made acutely aware of how we are so apologetic to strangers to whom we have done no wrong. It is our perception that we offend people by merely maintaining our privacy and personal space. I have reassessed my priorities. If a stranger feels insulted because I choose not to get in an elevator with them...that is their problem. I can live with the risk of hurting a strangers feelings. As an avid reader, I have recommended many books to many people. I am a bit critical of most books. They must either have entertainment value or valuable information. The Gift of Fear is one that I have probably recommended more than any other (both for its information value and readablility). You have done a great service. I'm certain you have influenced many to take positive steps towards listening to their intuition and maintaining their safety. Thank you.

I just finished reading "The Gift of Fear." After reading a review of the book in a previous issue of ELLE magazine, I simply wanted to read it because it sounded interesting but did not necessarily think it might pertain to me on a personal level. I was quite wrong. I believe my life and my intuitive abilities will be affected very positively by Mr. de Becker's book. In addition, I want my daughters (ages 16 and 14) to benefit from the knowledge I have gained by reading this book. I will have them read portions for now until they're mature enough to read the book in its entirety, and I will also try to explain the importance of listening to that intuitive voice that is so often ignored. If I had had the kind of information Mr. de Becker provides in his book earlier in my life, I am certain I could have avoided several dangerous situations in which I have found myself (as well as some pretty uncomfortable situations). I was also very touched by Mr. de Becker's sharing of his harrowing childhood experiences. I am filled with admiration that he has been able to commit his life to trying to understand and prevent violence rather than continuing to be a victim or victimize. Since I also come from a childhood home of "inappropriate anger," I understand that it is difficult to throw off the shackles of victimization. I will also aspire to provide hope to victims and to myself.

Dear Mr De Becker(or whatever employee will actually be reading this): I just finished reading your book and I must say that I liked it very much. I have worked in the field of prehospital medicine for 17 or so years now, and mostly see the aftermath of violence, but occasionally we paramedics are the objects of violence also. I have found the information in your book useful to me while in the field as well as in my personal life. Since I have been in the same field for so long, I am considering changing careers; I have always been interested in the field of psychology/sociology, and have toyed with the idea of becoming a Forensic Pathologist. However, I am exploring many different options and after reading your book I am particularly interested in the field that you specialize in. I would greatly appreciate it if you/your organization could advise me on what type of courses to take in order to pursue a career in this field. In the meantime, I am interested in the position of Administrative Assistant. Please send me any info or applications necessary-Thank you. Sincerely, Karen S. Boswell

I am very passionate about the services your company is providing for citizens. I I just recently discovered your company through investigators who came to a corporate office where I work, and after speaking with them I inquired about an entry level position. I know I would be an asset, as I have been learning much in the past about such matters for personal reasons. I think the immediate opening for an admini- strative assistant is a glove fit for Gavin De Becker and myself. I have already completed an application as forwarded to me by one of your investigators.

Dear Mr DeBecker, loved the book. I'm not in any more danger than the avg now, but hope to be doing very import work in the future that, unfortunately, could make me a target. I hope not, but we'll see. I realy don't want to be famous, just make a big difference for the better, probably in politics. So anyway, for a "Politics of Criminal Justice" class at the U of Wash, I read your book and will incorporate it into a discussion of the politics of crime and public perception, etc. My prof thinks your book feeds people's fear, and so may be part of the problem. I think I know better, but I'll have a hard time convincing him. He's not read your book, just the 7-14-97 NYT review by Patricia Leigh Brown (How hiply snotty it was. The review was biased, unfair, and innacurate). I heard you on NPR's Fresh Air earlier this year, and got your book after that, for my class project. My own view on this 'growing, unreasonable fear' business is that, like each generation's desire for better work, more money, bigger houses, etc, many of us are also becoming more intollerant of crime, even if the general level of serious crime is level or decreasing. I have no evidence to back this up, but I'd be very dissapointed in my fellow man if it were not true. So what if crime is not increasing significantly? If there is any crime, it's too much, and to not take reasonable steps to fight it is stupid. For years I have been operating on principles very similar to those outlined in your book. It is liberating. While bad things seem happen to everyone at one time or another, they seem to happen to others much more often than to me. I firmly believe that this is the direct result of smart choices on my part. And I'm not boasting when I say that my attitude towards life and people seems more positive and hopeful than most anyone I've ever met. The gift of fear and the promise of hope are very compatible. Your views on ending the cycle of violence against women is right on. I think every womman should lean self defence, not only so she can stop abuse, but to help those not strong enough to gain the mental strength to stay out of bad domestic situations in the first place. So, thanks again for sharing your work in the book. Stay happy. PR.

Your book, "The Gift of Fear" is fantastic. I've read it twice now and the chapter on Intimate Enemies at least 4 times. I've worked in victim services for over 15 years and wish I had your book as a resource when I started my profession. I'm now working for a company that developed a system for tracking offenders, 24 hours a day. The system integrates a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver with wireless communications and central monitoring to provide tracking capability of offenders for the criminal justice system. The system also incorporates intelligence (schedlues and rules) into the offender's Portable Tracking Device (PTD) which permits automated violation notification. I'd love to talk with you or with someone in your company about the product and your thoughts about its application in the criminal justice system. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Dawn G. Hello! My husband went to the Threat -mangement Seminar back a few months ago. When he came home he was completely intrigued by your company. He met with some of the head honchos and they were very interested in him with joining the company. At the moment he is still in the U.S. Navy as a criminal investigator for the Seal Beach Weapons Station. He has been an investigator for two years now and really enjoys his work. He has always wanted to create his own protective service company if not in the near future maybe in the long one.As I said he was very interested in your company and joining the team. He bought your book and has started to read it.And I will read it also. I have seen Gavin de Becker on t.v. a few times and was very intrigued by his knowledge with life experiences and just plain simple common sense that I believe people just don't use.My husband will be having an interview with your firm in the next couple of weeks. We are both very excited (especially he is) and we hope all goes well and he gets to join the team in the next few years. Thank you!

I have recently read "The Gift of Fear," and found it incredibly enlightening. A friend of mine (an acquaintence from my gym) mentioned the book to me,and to be quite candid, I was skeptical about another so-called "Self-help" book. Well, I feel fortunate that my friend insisted I read at least the first chapter--well, that goes without saying--I finished the book within a few days. So why am I submitting comments--I'm so moved by this book--it actually substantiates what I've felt in terms on interpersonal relations (trusting one's instincts). I've been lucky because I have a number of close calls, but because I went with my gut feeling--I escaped. Like Mr. DeBecker, I grew up in an alocoholic, abusive household, and I am eager to hep others. Thank you for an excellent book--you are truly a remarkable man.

Dear Mr. de Becker, 'The Gift of Fear' is a wonderfully written book and a valuable resource. The personal insights and information added a great deal to the message and an individual's ability to empathize and identify with it. The only thing I would have changed is the length-- at 300 pages it still wasn't long enough for all the interest it sparks.

i just finished reading " the gift of fear: survival signals that protect us from violence," and i have to admit that while i find it very educational, it requires more than one reading for me to gain all the knowledge available here. this book impressed me and also made me aware of some of the less than attractive personality traits i possess. i feel very sorry for women after reading this book as i know how i woul dread to live in the constant state of fear they must deal with every waking moment. i will be much more aware in the future of how i speak to and interact with women. they deserve respect and we as men should give it to them if they require it for the simple reason that we do not live with the fear they do. thank you mr. de becker for this education.

I just finished reading "The Gift of Fear". What an insightful and admirable piece of work. I wish I could have read this book about two years ago maybe I could have shown my sister the warning signs (and her denial) and could have helped her prevent or at least get out of a VERY abusive situation sooner. Although between Colleen and myself, (and according to your book), we "intuitively" survived. From "Cold Turkey" to "Second phone line with a unfamiliar female voice" to "making herself unavailable anywhere" to noticing he attached his "tentacles" to another. I feel for her. You are so right about "TRO's" and "engage/enrage". Your book moved me to tears many times. Thank you for sharing with us. God Bless You!

My lessons were hard learned by experience, I am grateful that my 17 year old daughter can instead read your book and learn how NOT to behave and react. When I laid it on her bed and told her to read it, I felt very hopeful. Thank you and God Bless you Mr. DeBecker

I live in a country gripped by violent crime, and I often feel afraid for my own safety. I am half way through 'The Gift of Fear' and though I know that my new trust in intuition and the lessons learnt in the book will not hide me from violence, they will certainly help me to avoid it. Thank you Gavin for providing me with the knowledge to become empowered so that I am no longer filled with fear.

I've seen Mr. de Becker on The Today Show and recently finished reading The Gift of Fear. He makes sense. Although many of the situations presented in the book do not (and hopefully never will) apply to me, the overall knowledge I gained from reading it is invaluable to me. My fiance is currently in the FBI Academy, and I've STRONGLY recommended he read it before he graduates. (It should be required reading at Quantico, in my opinion). Mr. de Becker is doing a great service to all through his work and his book. My applause. P.S. Are you hiring? Thinking of opening an office on the east coast, say, in the Philly area?? I just finished "Gift of Fear" and loved it. I bought it after being assaulted and robbed in the parking lot at work. I was amazed at how much more I learned from the book that I can apply to my work. I am a social worker providing intensive services to families who have abused and/or neglected their children. Much of the information in the book can be applied to different aspects of my work: child abuse, domestic violence, going to homes in the inner city, etc. I would really enjoy seeing a book that focuses on child abuse and social services. The book was so enjoyable and important that I am buying it for friends and family members as Christmas gifts.

To: Mr. Gavin de Becker. After seeing you interviewed on a talk show, I bought "The Gift of Fear" and read it cover to cover. Thank you for a very important work (and website). As a single female who travels extensively in Asia for business, (I will soon move to Indonesia to conduct cross-cultural training lectures), I have long been in charge of my own personal safety. Your comments serve to confirm many of the issues and suspicions I have known (intuitively!) or had to discover, fortunately without sustaining injury myself. The couple of close calls I did have were in Japan, where I lived for almost 5 years. (As for Japan being the safest country in the world, perhaps that applies for men but not for women, on a few levels...) My future lectures will be borrowing from your ideas on safety, confidence in our own intuition, and being alert for the sharks that swim around us, wherever in the world we go. Finally I want to commend you on the un-self-serving approach of your firm, which (I perceive) places safety and protection above profit.

Dear Mr. DeBecker, I saw you on the Home and Family Show. I was very interested in your segment on keeping your kids safe, particularly what you said about strangers. It would be great if you could elaborate on this, such as specific wording to teach children. For example I told my children that a stranger is someone mommy and daddy do not know, instead of someone they do not know. Thanks. Sincerely, Diane Luke

A really nice site! Straight-forward and easy in which to move around. Mr. de Becker, I really enjoyed your book, "Gift of Fear". I found that the reader progresses through the first few chapters in small, familiar steps; allowing him/her to feel more confident in tackling the increasingly more complex situations of the following pages. Also, I appreciate the message you are attempting to deliver. Now that I've just finished the book, I guess my next task is to apply the lessons I've learned to my everyday life. Thank you for a terrific book! :) Re: Employment Opportunities and Upcoming Events I WISH I still lived in California again! I would love to attempt to work for your company. To Gavin De Becker: I just finished reading your book "The Gift of Fear / Survival Signals that protect us from violence". I'm not quite sure what drew me to read it, except it seemed interesting. I'm in no unique situations prone either to violence or fear. However, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your book and 'intuitively' found it extremely accurate and consistent with the few things I've thus far learned about life. It has confirmed to me many of the things I have always felt, and taught me a great deal more. Your book and experiences seem an excellent addition to any ones understanding of life and people and I appreciate the opportunity to have listened. It seems to me that its not merely your work, but your insights into who we are as a people that is so special. I'm not sure I have expressed the above well and suspect I am actually understating the value of your work - though I suspect you indeed fully appreciate its value (or you wouldn't have come this far). I wanted to thank you for your book "Gift of Fear." Trite to say but you bring a great deal of illumination to a necessary subject, especially for women. As a devote Catholic, trying to live faith with charity for those with whom I come into daily contact, your book provides me with the very real ability to examine situations and people for what they are, and if they are dangerous, avoid them. I have a bit more backbone now and speak my mind without being cruel. But I also now know to be direct and firm with someone who needs to hear "no" for an answer. Now that I've lived long enough to "know" that predators do indeed exist, it is nonetheless helpful to know how to recognize them -- that feeling someone is overly familiar is not about my being too rigid, repressed, or stuck-up. As you say, niceness and charm are tools, not character traits. Unwittingly I have been following a small piece of your advice for sometime before I read your book this summer, but, until this summer, there were always lingering doubts about whether I had "overreacted" in a particular situation. I have never hesistated in telling my friends, "no matter how silly you think you're behaving, if your gut tells you to be afraid, act on it! Forget human respect and pride for the moment." Thanks to your book, I can explain to myself and to them WHY it is fine to react the ways we have. Aand to take my own advice! To be honest, I bought your book because I heard youu say that you live an "anxiety-free" and fear-free life. This is what truly intrigues me. That is the place I want to live. Your observations in "The Gift of Fear" have helped me to define the way there. In any case, thank you for your effort, and for putting things down for us that we already knew but couldn't quite put into words -- it's a very helpful tool. Evil exists, and we cannot hope to beat it if we refuse to recognize it for what it is, in all its forms. Now I can be truly kinder to those who need me and truly firm with those who may want to destroy me. Strong words, but heartfelt. Thank you again. Sincerely, Lourdes G. Iglesias P.S. I am passing your book around to my friends. Good for them but fewer royalties for you, I'm afraid. Forgive me.

Dear Friends, I am interested in receiving information concerning Mr. de Becker's conditions and requirements for making public appearances. I am the Director of CAUSE - Coalition of Advocates for Utah Survivors' Empowerment - a nonprofit network of individuals and organizations committed to the elimination of sexual violence. I have just finished Mr. de Becker's book and know that the message he has to share could effectively touch the lives of so many individuals here in Utah. As you may know, our state has a unique "trusting" dynamic (possibly due to the predominant culture, but I am uncomfortable pointing fingers). Is there a chance that I may request the name of Mr. de Becker's booking agent for the sake of inquiry? I am VERY interested in arranging for Mr. de Becker to visit Utah, but am unfamiliar with the proper procedure to pursue this professional engagement. Please let me know if I'm way out there or if this is not a terribly unusual request. I am sure many individuals and organizations have expressed an interest in Mr. de Becker's experience and knowledge. I would be honored to facilitate a setting in which Mr. de Becker would have the opportunity educate and enlighten Utah community members. (And sell a few books as well!) I would be more than happy to submit an official request or proposal if necessary. Just let me know the appropriate steps! Thanks for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Denise Clark Director, CAUSE
